Shall I get an AE86?

325i. This is the one to have! One of the best drivers cars for the money ever in my eyes, stupid fast, tuneable, great lively rear end, nice noise, look good......You'll get a great one for the money, and a huge chunk of change to insure/modify/get some lessons on high-po driving.

Do a big 6 on it, 335i. Decimate everyone.

Is a 335i an M3 with a straight six from 325i engine transplant?

Thanks for that utterly useless reply. He didn't ask that, he asked me personally what I would spend £4k on.

I answered that question.

With all due respect Fox, I think you're a little out of order with this reply.
Saitrix asked a question of what you would buy that was rwd. He was pretty specific about that. So for you to go off on another "this is why everyone should own a Mondeo" is a little pointless.

Sounds to me like a Saitrix has some specific ideas on what he's looking for, and has already stated that he doesn't want a BMW E30 or a fwd car. Can I suggest you keep it on topic and not get into a slanging match with fellow posters.

Saitrix *specifically* asked me. Read his post. He also said, in his question to *me*, what would *I* buy with £4k and a 'preference' for RWD.

Look, see?

Fox, here is one for you. If you had roughly £4k, and RWD was preferable. What car would you buy?

I answered that.

He later confirmed he asked me, and knew very well he's get a totally different response from me:

I realised Fox would say something completely different to whats been said already, hense why i asked him. Get a good variatey of opinions.

Do I get an apology from you yet? ;)

Why don't you take your own advice? This was dealt with until you came forward with your inaccurate 2 pence.

I would say it is sticking a 3.5 from the 535i into the 325i.

I've seen an E30 with an M5 big six in it. Looked a complete monster. Not cheap to do, or light though. Would be a good hooligans car though.

Personally I narrowed my options at £5k to an mk2 MX5 or an S14.
Both are great cars. The MX is more raw and a smile a minute, especially with the roof down. Unfortunately the MX hasn't enough enough power to drift it unless it's wet and you have poor tyres on the rear.
The S14 is a far better drift monster, more relaxed in day to day use, though is more expensive to run (grp 18 vs grp 12, far worse fuel economy and more to go wrong).
Personally I didn't care which I bought, it was whatever one I found first.

I seem to remember the 335i being an ultra rare turbocharged 3 Series only available in Africa? That sounds a bit... wacky actually but it rings a bell.

Its a shame his 4k won't get him a MK2 MX5, he would be better getting a mint Mk1 V-Special since he wants the 1.8.

What about waiting another year, save some more money and get a MK2 1.8i S so you get all the toys (Electric Mirrors / LSD etc.)

Well yes i was thinking that myself accually. Also one huge thing is that insurance will be easier next year. NUD wouldnt quote me even on the mk1 1.6 . Whereas they quoted me £980 on my 1.6 Focus fully comp which aint half bad. So i may save my pennies for another year, then hopefully a mk2 could be cheaper. I also did a quote on 3 series and the largest engine NUD would quote me on was the 320i. That was £1250 tpf&t. :(

Mr_Sukebe,
Please don't have a go at Fox, i said preferably a RWD to him for a reason, i wanted to see what he thought for both FWD and RWD, i had my guesses what cars he would say. Yes maybe one of his replies wasnt in the nicest tone but he had only done what i had asked him.

Also driving experience/fun factor goes above practicality. Infact the idea of a t-bar/soft top is appealing to me, also the hairdresser comments on the mx5 does not bother me in the slightest.

Really the list now is...

mk1 mr2, mk1/2 mx5, s13, rx7.

Of course i need to look at them closer as i have not sat in any of them. I will also have a look at the examples of cars from different classes for £5k. Make sure that its this style for sure i want, yes that includes the 3/5 series. But i think i will put all this off for a year, i will have more money and insurance will be less so easier to get insured.

I suppose being 19 and 2 NCB isnt too bad on the above cars i listed? Maybe the rx7 will be bad for the turbo...

Another engine transplanters option is the M3 Evo engine into an E30. Seen some videos of one blokes and it is hella fast. With the E30 chassis very very tail happy too.

Probably not an easy option though...

Maybe an E36, but finding one with an LSD (or retrofitting) isn't easy. BMW stopped fitting the sport models with an LSD in 1995 to try and widen the gap between the cooking models and the M3 somewhat. You can retrofit into the standard open diff case, but finding suitable LSD internals isnt easy due to the relative rarity.

If you're looking at a £5k budget, then you can get an S14 rather than an S13. Better base for modding (larger engine, more power as stock) :)

Yup next year i will have around a £5k budget so the S14 is an option. Though if im honest the MX5 looks my favourate right now. Though i havent seen the insides of the S14 and S13.
