Sherlock - Series 2 - BBC

I'm not expecing a total bare room, no. Why not slip in a Philipe Starck Lemon Squezzer.

"Would it have detracted from the story if the bottle had not been there?"

Still stands?

Enough now though, derailing thread here

Of course it wouldn't have detracted from the story, but that's an inane question. Hence why I asked whether they shouldn't be in a bare room - after all, if no branded sauce bottles are allowed, then where do you stop?

Thought working dogging into Hounds of the Baskerville was a very clever idea. I also loved Sherlocks manic analysis of the son and mother in the hotel while he was still under the affects of the drug. Yeah I sussed it was a gas bourne drug in the hollow pretty much straight away but I figured it was going to be a Scooby Doo style waste outlet from the research facility rather than what it turned out to be. Still thought it was good overall, though slightly confused over the size of the dog footprints, if it was a normal dog they were keeping out there.

04:44 Apple product placement

I thought BBC were immune to such nonsense. Did they really need to show the logo? A generic laptop with the logo either concealed or out of shot would have been fine.

It's not product placement. They'd have had to have cleared that in order to use it. For product placement in the UK we must, by law, be informed before the show or during the show that product placement is about to take place.

That's almost worse;

"Warning Warning, Alert Alert. There will be product placement in the following broadcast, make sure you keep you eyes peeled for it. If you have difficulty spotting the product placement why not call into your nearest spec savers for a free eye exam"

I don't see the problem really, so long as it's not glaringly intrusive;

Oh hello Watson, did you see my really cool new mac book pro which is so much cooler than an ordinary PC. Look at all the whizzy whoosy stuff it can do which is entirely pointless but I'm going to make use of it anyways for the rest of this episode.

It's meant to be a show grounded in reality so what harm is there in real objects appearing in the show. It would be different if it was something like Star Trek and people were using Nokias or something.

I don't know if it's just me but I found the final quarter of the last two episodes a bit boring. Yes I know they have to run through the episodes mysteries but do they really need to talk so long about it.

It might be worse, but there are brand names in a lot of TV shows. Product placement is very different from simply seeing a brand name in a TV programme. That's my point, there was none of it in Sherlock. No one actively advertising any product.

People seem to confuse the two things.

Lol, what a pointless and stupid discussion. Bones driving a new car with a new feature and talking at length about it with the product name shown obviously, product placement. Something simply being on screen, not product placement 99.9% of the time.

What should they have done, designed a range of generic non branded cars with different styles so no car brand got advertised, a new company for HP, and cigarettes, clothes, the Royal Family is a brand, maybe they should have gone to "Ruckingham" palace in the first ep of this series. Who cares either way, the vast majority of product placement is not intrusive, when the characters go out of their way to TALK about that product instead of the dialogue being about the story, that is intrusive.

Either way, I didn't like the episode at all, felt more like it was trying to go overboard for a really well known Sherlock story. When shows keep trying new things for the sake of it, they get crap. THe mind palace was beyond embarrassing. Wasn't a patch on the other 4 eps and the polar opposite to the 2x01 in quality all around.

Couldn't stand Russell Tovey in this role, he just isn't that good an actor.

Agreed, but do you think he got the role on merit or simply to make people think something else was going on given what he plays in Being Human?

Ok finally managed to watch the first and second episodes that i had recorded and have to say i enjoyed it.

The first episode i was beginning to seriously dislike Sherlock and the way he was coming across ie like a spoilt little child and i didnt take to him all that much...still was a decent episode as its bringing Sherlock into the 21st century so to speak.

The second episode, hounds of baskerville was much much better imho and i started to take to Sherlock a bit more than i did in the first episode.

I do like the John Watson character though and i like their little banter they have between them.

Looking forward to the final episode although i have to admit, it would have been nice if they had made it more than 3 episodes ie a season long series would have been nice.

I say this as im a huge Sherlock fan myself...just not a fan of the hollywood treatment Sherlock has got..

That's basically what I said. People think that a brand name on TV is automatically product placement. It's not. If it was the viewer must, by law, be told about it.

That small scene alone very nearly made me hate that film, however the sound of the Beastie Boys soon after calmed me down!

Anyway, on topic, so far so good. Last weeks was better but this one wasnt too bad. Secret weapons research bases are always a risky plot device and they only just about pulled it off in my opinion. The main thing that annoyed me about this weeks episode was not being able to remember the name of the guy playing the hotel owner!

Nope, Moffat did the first one

He clearly had an influence in this, as easily demonstrated by the completely unnecessary gay couple running the local tavern.
Every episode of this dr who and whatever else he touches have blatant unnecessary references to such coupling. Its so overstated now, it is becoming irksome.

I love this show, I thought this episode had some moments of excellence, but other oddities, the gfx mind palace business, swoosh swoosh for no added benefit.
They are getting lazy in parts.
