Should capital punishment be brought back?

No. You cannot undo an injustice if someone is shown to be innocent at a later date. If you don't think errors would be made then look at the recent release of Andrew Malkinson after 17 years for a crime he didn't commit (yes I know it probably wouldn't have been considered a capital offense but it's an example of a recent error). Mistakes will happen.

Prison is the punishment, so it's a no from me.

Life, no parole & die in Prison, although costlier is a more fitting punishment for those types of crimes.

Enf of life care in Prison, handcuffed to a screw who doesn't give a **** about you as you take you last breath, feels like karma.

Really conflicted on this one tbh, one side of me says a simple bullet much like a slaughter house gun none of this drawn out injection malarkey and it happens within 12 hrs of the sentence being handed down and the body wrapped rags from the waste bins and dumped at sea. ZERO trace of them to be left behind. It should be reserved categorically for the most heinous of crimes and proven repeat offenders of whatever cleverer people than me come up with.

The lawyers should be kept totally away from it whether its death or 50 years life makes zero difference to the conviction.

We do need to invest in some modern style prisons though, overcrowding is a poor situation to be in. Yes people **** up now and then and some form of punishment is deserved but the speeding accountant motorcyclist doing 120mph down the A1 does not need to be thrown in a cell with serial GBH offender etc.

Agree on this one. Unfortunately digging up rocks with a pickaxe is not that well suited to this country. Agree with the principle though.

I'd support the death penalty for certain very violent crimes eg the Liverpool gang shooting.

No but we have plenty of farm ditches that need clearing, which the Tory`s took away the benefit from the farming doing so we end up with more flooding due to the ditches being clogged with crap. Penal labour would be good to sort some of the scum inner city chavs out.

I think swift justice can often end with injustice.

What if someone confessed to the crime of murder, and dna evidence backed it up, would the people against the death penalty still be against it in that situation?

This has happened in the USA on a number of occasions. The Police get false confessions (as essentially they can lie and do wherever they wish) and then use DNA evidence to prove people are guilty even when they are not. So yes, I am still against it.

We're all gonna go at some point, the death penalty is just sort of bringing it forward somewhat.
Only joking, I'm opposed to it (mostly) but there are some cases where you just cannot comprehend someone not being executed. Painfully too for that matter.

Look at countries which do have the death penalty. Do they have markedly less crime? Nope.

Corporal punishment though: I personally don't see many issues against bringing that back.

So your against the death penalty but for inflicting acts of violence upon children?
Didn't do me any harm. Taught me respect amongst other things.

Anyway, I actually meant for adults not children.
Sorry, I should have been more specific but I assumed that since the thread is about the arguments for and against bringing back the death penalty, then I shouldn't have to stipulate that I was talking about corporal punishment for adults.

However, since you mention it, I do personally believe that our feral youth of today might actually benefit from a good caning now & again :)

For those of you in favour of the death penalty, what if the penalty were applied immediately? That is, the convicted is killed immediately after the guilty verdict is given, right there in front of everyone. The foreman / forewoman delivers the verdict, the judge gives the sentence of death, and someone pulls a lever and the convicted dies. No appeals - the convicted has had a fair trial, after all. Oh, and you're on the jury. Are you having second thoughts?

How about that chair they have on the Graham Norton show? Too much waffle the jurors don't like, judge gets the signal and the lever gets pulled. Next defendant please!
