Arsenal's best starting 11 and formation. What you think?

ARSENAL%20STARTING%20LINEUP.jpg

It looks a hell of a lot better now han it did a little while ago.

The one thing I dont like is the formation.

I would love to see a return to 442, anda focus on keeping it tight to begin with and take it from there.

However the squad depth is where we are still weak.

Hang on, there are some glaring errors on the bench, Djorou instead of Koscelny and no Chamberlain.....

Where would we have played Hazard had we signed him? (On the bench like Benayoun?)

Just goes to show that different people have different opinions... personally I'd pick Arshavin ahead of Walcott, Koscielny ahead of Djourou, Frimpong ahead of Song (give him a chance at least) and Almunia ahead of Fabianski

Edit: Theo wasn't £15m, final bill came to about £9.3-9.7m afaik (it was originally £5m base amount, £0.1m per max of 20 international appearances, £1m per max of 5 batches of 10 league appearances/starts, but Saints nearly went out of business and were desperate for cash so negotiated an early settlment, similar to what MU/Leeds did with Rio.

i changed my mind about wenger. i will give him till end of the season to finish top 4 and i will be satisfied but next summer has to buy more players whilst keeping this team as it is and challenge and win the title and/or other trophies next season

Arsenal makes loss on reduced sales of players

Premier League football club Arsenal recorded a £2.5m ($4m) loss in the half year to December 2010, largely on the back of reduced player revenues.

There were no major player sales in summer 2010, unlike in previous years when the club made a big-name sale.

The loss contrasts with a £29.2m profit in the corresponding period a year earlier.

The results come a day after the London club lost the Carling Cup final by 2-1 to Birmingham at Wembley.

'Sustainable'

In the 2009 close-season the club made £33.9m from player sales, including Kolo Toure and Emmanuel Adebayor leaving to join Manchester City.

But in the summer of 2010 it only made £4m from player sales.

Arsenal's determination to hold onto its current big name players was reiterated by chief executive Ivan Gazidis, who told the BBC on Sunday "we have a sustainable business model".

"It gives us the strength to say we don't need to sell [captain] Cesc Fabregas to raise money," he said.

Football operating profit, before depreciation and player trading, was £9.3 million, compared to £18m in 2009.

And operating profit before depreciation and player trading was £12.6m, down from £29.3m in 2009.

'Robust'

The club said there had been a reduction in income from the sale of property, but that it had sold 50 apartments at the Highbury Square complex at its former stadium.

Those sales generated revenue of £22.5m, compared to £96.6m from the sale of 261 flats a year before.

In addition, by 30 November 2010 Arsenal had only played 10 home games at their Emirates stadium compared to 12 in the same period the year before.

"This is a robust performance in the current climate and is where we expected to be at this stage of the financial year and at this stage in our longer term development plans for the growth of the club," said Peter Hill-Wood, club non-executive chairman.

He added: "We continue to operate as a self-funding club. This brings its own challenges in an increasingly competitive environment but provides the platform for a secure and positive long term future."

That's Arsenals figures. Tbh they're disturbingly driven by the sale of assets. There's only around £16-17mill worth of flats left I believe? As a comparison Utd's half yearly EBITDA was c60mill.

Only song is upgradeable in this first 11.

I really hope this is a change in Wengers philosophy.

I'm actually pretty happy with that starting 11. Obviously it would look better with Fabregas there, but I think Arteta should do fine. Would be nice to get a more composed player to replace Song, but I still don't think he's terrible, it's not like he gets much help.

I think with Mertesacker and Santos, the defence has been improved astonishingly, over what it was last season. I liked Clichy, but the lad just couldn't defend.

Same, Mertesacker and Santos have improved our defence no end. :)

Im happy with Mertesacker but not so sure about this Santos fella...lets hope he does the business...would have liked to see either Samba or Cahill come in...maybe next transfer window we can nab Cahill on a freebie thus giving Bolton a huge middle finger:p.

Not so keen on Arteta but i hope he does well and same with Benayoun...i suppose with Wilshere back soon-ish...they will be used as subs or backup's but god do we desperately need some mid-field creativity because without that RVP aint gonna score FA really and hes our main target man.

Fingers crossed that these signings kick start our season and we get back into the top 4.

iirc he was only used in the first team while the other players were rested :)

He played in February as well as July and August. That's a mighty long rest those other left backs are having... :p

Don't Bastos and Maicon play as their fullbacks now?

Not sure, I checked on ESPN and he started some Copa America games.

I don't think he is their starter anymore, but he is definitely in and around the squad.

When I've seen him play he seems capable of defending, so I'm happy with him. :)

Playing for Brazil is a mark of quality if you are playing in a position in which Brazil produce good quality players.

Being a full back or defensive midfielder for Brazil doesnt always equate to being a good player in the PL.

The only concern I have is that Santos looks like he REALLY likes to get up the pitch, the same goes for Sagna and Song too, so we could be pretty exposed at times. I just hope Sagna and Song become more disciplined and stay back as neither of them offer much up front.

Oh no I'm not saying he's a world beater or anything like that, in fact I've not seen him play that much but I think he could be pretty handy. I don't think any of our signings have been 'super quality' as Wenger put it, but they all come with experience and their own individual qualities and I think our squad has been improved with the arrival of all players over the summer.

He spent the most at Celtic and Strachan still did better than him in less time with less money.

O'Neill and Strachan spent similar amounts at Celtic. It's debatable whether Strachan did better as well, he got to the last 16 of the Champions League - but with the same points total as O'Neill did. O'Neill took us to a UEFA Cup final and won more trophies domestically. Not to forget the massive point that Strachan took over from O'Neill thus inheriting most of his work so it's impossible to make this comparison fairly.

Speaking as a fan of a team he managed for 5 years, I think he is much more than just a cheque-book manager.
