Should Wenger go? (Spoilers!)

One thing that always gets me is this strong tendency to look at French players or ones playing in that league. I know Arsene is French and all, but like their national team, they went from being world-beaters to a laughing stock. If I were looking for players, a feeder league like France's wouldn't be high on my list when it came to buying anyone decent.

He needs experienced players, the people who say Arsenal have no money, this guy http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alisher_Usmanov owns a massive share in the club and is the 35th richest person in the world.

Why exactly would he pour his own money into Arsenal when he's not even anything like the largest shareholder? I'm sure if he owned the club like Roman does Chelsea things would be different but he doesn't.

From wiki..

In April 2011, Kroenke extended his ownership of the club by purchasing the shareholdings of Nina Bracewell-Smith (15.9%), Danny Fiszman (16.11%) and other directors of the Arsenal board, taking his shareholding to the current total of 66.64%. Under company law Kroenke, as majority shareholder, is obliged to make an offer for the remaining shares in the club, which would include those owned by Red & White Holdings as well as any stakes held by the remaining minority shareholders of the club; these include those owned by former players as well as three shares owned by the Arsenal Supporters' Trust.

Kroenke owns about 5 mediocre teams, doesn't spend much money on them, but is happy to make money from them. Sounds right up the boards street from the sound of things.

Colorado Avalanche have been in a similar sort of situation to Arsenal but I'm not sure if it's really down to their owners or not. They have some excellent youth skaters but they need a few more additions to their team to truly compete in the NHL... sounds a bit like Arsenal anyway. :p

Not sure on the other franchises that Kroenke has his fingers in.

I know a few Americans and when he heard Kroenke was really getting stuck into our shares he was like 'lol, good luck'. Our best hope at this point for cash splashing would probably be trying to get his wife into football as she's sitting on a rather immense amount of the stuff herself.

WE don't need billions invested, City can buy 6-7 30mil players, and then, the players they aren't interested in aren't worth anything like that. Its pretty simple, go around all the clubs in every top league, theres HUNDREDS of top quality players, honestly, thousands that are better than a LOT of the players we have, and very few are on more than 50k a week.

Sorry but, we can afford to get players, the difference between your average 3mil player and your average 15mil player is pretty huge, the difference between a 15mil and an average 35mil player is very very small, and theres only a couple 80mil + players out there, and they are unmatchable, yet they aren't required to win things.

You have to look at WHAT WE HAVE, Denilson on 40k a week, sorry but there are actually and without exageration thousands of players who are twice as good as him who would be happy with half the wages.

Theres 10's of mil's being wasted on guys who don't play, or aren't remotely good enough to be in the EPL. Every year you keep them its wages we can't spend on other players, and well over the past 4 seasons Denilson has probably taken home 15mil, so thats 15mil less we could now be spending on a new player, and the wages wouldn't be an issue. This is so common throughout our squad its a joke. Theres only 4-5 players in the squad who could actually move on and get more money, the vast majority of our youth, reserve and senior players are being overpaid and aren't even close to good enough.

How much was Adam, how much was Young, how much was Kompany, how much would Parker be, how much was Meireles, how much for Wes Brown, etc, etc, etc, etc.

Sorry but not a single one of those players wouldn't have been quite easily bought in to Arsenal, for very good prices, for not bad wages at all........ yet we spent up to 15mil on AOC, when Young, at 16mil, is proven and able to go right now. Had we bought him for 15mil 3 seasons ago, maybe 20mil, he would have joined from Villa and we'd have a fantastic player.

Look at the team, look at the mistakes, look at the quality of players we are bringing in. As said, Tony Adams says Wenger isn't a good coach, our defence is a shambles, they can't get SIMPLE things right, and they haven't been fixed for years. Everything points to a coach who can't identify mistakes, can't fix them, and lately can't judge the potential of a player at all accurately.

We've spent more than 20mil on three defenders, but we froze out one CB and got rid of another after offering a slap in the face contract to stay despite being probably our best player behind Cesc in the previous few years. Lose two great players, overspend on 3 cb's. Kompany was 5mil, and we ignored a player we'd been tracking for years, and then spent MORE than that on Squillaci a couple seasons later. Its laughable the amount he gets wrong.

I went with a theory a long time ago that one of the key things most people agree Wenger brought to the league when he joined was nutrition and fitness. Arsenal had a squad of highly athletic, fast footballers who ate and trained(fitness wise) better than any other team in the league, that gave us a HUGE advantage and our OLD defence trained by other managers continued to be VERY solid for years.

When all the other teams in the league, top to bottom, all adopted the athletic/fitness/nutrition side of football the huge advantage Wenger had in that part of his management completely evapourated. Arsenal were no longer the fittest, strongest, fastest team and one of our biggest advantages was gone.

Our senior back 4, and their backup, and people who played with them all left, and our new defence was a shambles, because Wenger relied on the defence we had BEFORE he joined to maintain the defence.

So now we have, no fitness advantage, and a coach who quite plainly can't organise, coach or teach a defence in charge and completely unwilling to change.

There is also the appeal factor as well, Young went to Man Utd for 16 million because he saw a big chance of winning at least 1 trophy.

If he moved to Arsenal the asking price would have been much more, probably £20 million.

Also Wenger hasn't done himself any favours, clubs around the world know he has £55 million+ to spend and after that massive defeat, they know Wenger is starting to get desperate and they will jack there prices up accordingly.

Only today I read an article covering this issue.

I hope its not true, because it seems to indicate, Kronke values commercial profit over trophies.

no ifs or buts

For me there is still a few ifs around.

I look at it and think, the transfer window closes in a couple of days so any new manager would not have time to do any deals. Heck, they won't even have time to get to know the setup, have a proper preseason etc.

So if Wenger were to leave, it should have been 3 months ago. Given that he's stayed, I think the board should stick by him until December and review the situation then. If results are bad, then maybe look at making a change with a view to getting a new manager in before Christmas. Even if a new manager were to come in, he isn't going to magically get vastly improved results with Wenger's squad compared to Wenger himself. Obviously one key factor is if Wenger loses the support of the players (and I'm talking proper players like RvP, Vermaelen etc, not mickey mouse wannabes like Bendtner).

Realistically, I would expect Wenger to leave my mutual consent next summer if Arsenal have a failed season.

Finally just something to throw out there, worth noting that Arsenal have won every cup match they've played this season, and in the league the only teams that have scored against them are top4 sides (I think most realists had already accepted that Arsenal were likely to drop out of the top 4 this season even before a ball was kicked).

Our senior back 4, and their backup, and people who played with them all left, and our new defence was a shambles, because Wenger relied on the defence we had BEFORE he joined to maintain the defence.

That's not quite true though is it. He inherited Adams/Dixon/Bould/Winterburn from the George Graham era, but he didn't get rid of them and bring in rubbish defenders. There was the small matter of the invincibles in between the defenders above and what we have now. Wenger brought in Lauren/Campbell/Toure/Cole. Not sure if Cole was already at the club as a youth before Wenger, but he brought him into the first team.

So Wenger didn't bring in a rubbish defence straight after the famous back four, he actually rebuilt it extremely well. Unfortunately, what's happened since then has not be good.

I dont understand what the problem was with Carlos Vela. I thought he was very good.

He obviously still thinks he may have a future at the club since he's only gone out on loan. Personally I found it strange though, I'd have thought getting Bendtner off the books and having Vela in the squad instead would have been the priority.

Must admit I'd really struggling to understand the LB situation, he's let Clichy go for a pittance by Man City terms, even allowing for the fact it was the last year of his contract. OK you think so Gibbs is now first choice with Traore as backup. Yet supposedly Traore may be going to QPR and with Gibbs being somewhat injury prone (and better at LM than LB anyway) it just seems to lack foresight.

Somebody somewhere made the point that although Liverpool may have overpaid for some of their players at least they got the deals sorted out earlier in the summer so have been able to get their team bedded in ready for the new season. Then you look at Arsenal and it is a bit of a shambles, their two most creative midfielders left after the start of the season leaving no time for replacements not to mention the fact that we had to pay their salaries all summer.

It makes you wonder sometimes, what if Arsenal had just gone to Everton in June and said OK here you go, £16m for Jagielka, then gone to West Ham and said OK here you go, £8m for Scott Parker. We know there was £24m to spend because we spend that on Gervinho and Chamberlain. Maybe not the best pieces of business in the world but we wouldn't have to be relying on kids to play in the spine of the team in the Champions League or at Old Trafford.

Surely if Chamberlain (a player we don't need right now and likely won't tie down a place in the first team for a couple of years) is worth £12m then proven internationals with many years experience in the Prem who could have literally slotted into the team after a full preseason would be worth those kind of sums?

What do you know? O'Neil is not an average chequebook manager at all.

I know more than you.

Did you know that when he was at Villa he spent more than any other club in the league other than Man City?

He spent the most at Celtic and Strachan still did better than him in less time with less money.

O'Neil was decent at Leicester and Wycombe, but has never successfully managed a top level club to anything resembling success for the size of club.

So, whats your proof that he is not an average chequebook manager, I will be amazed to see what your response is :p
