if I won the lottery i would have one of those in the front room just to look at and start up every now and again. much want.

Hmm, that may take the crown from the RSV4 as the best sounding bike, ever. Can't believe it's only got 80bhp, however 80lb/ft of torque is probably more than enough

Sounds like a friggin spitfire engine

Isn't that just because it revs higher though? I thought horsepower is calculated using torque and revs?

It's not just because they are physically able to rev higher without exploding. You could make the Norton engine strong enough to rev higher, but by itself it wouldn't make any more power because torque output of the engine rapidly falls off at high RPM.

Sportsbike engines produce more power by maintaining their torque output at high RPM. This not only requires a stronger, better balanced engine but one that is capable of flowing enough air and burning the fuel quickly enough. This means bigger valves, better designed ports and combustion chambers, longer duration and higher lift cams etc.

So really we need to look at some torque curves and see how big the 80lbft range is. What torque/power is a litre sports bike likely to have at 6000rpm?
