I had endless 'help' from Hazel while repairing a garden wall today.

Despite putting out water bowls Lyra insists on drinking from the water fall..

Lyra goes out at night and catches toads from the pond, brings them inside the house as a gift. They survive OK so are returned safely back to the pond.

Lyra is still recovering from 'puppy strangles' disease but her high dose of steroid is now reducing and will tail off in about 2 weeks. One of the side effects was weight gain, the poor thing put on 2Kg body weight which needs to come off when her medication finishes.

Dogs somehow caught this bird in the garden just now, managed to rescue it while it was still (almost) in one piece... Looks like a Sparrow Hawk (?) but what it was doing out at night is anybody's guess.. Daughter works in a Vet practice so will take it in tomorrow if it survives the night, it's had a big shock.

Good news, bird survived the night and was treated at the vet's. No broken bones and only superficial injuries, it has now been taken away by a raptor expert for rehab and should be released in a couple of weeks after it has recovered. Guilty dog was our Cairn Terrier pup who on her walk today chased every bird she saw in the fields. Clearly got a taste for them..

*only reason I can think of for a Sparrow Hawk to be out at night is that is was spooked from its overnight roost by a large owl - there are plenty around here. It panicked and then flew into our window, our dog then pounced on it while it was stunned.

** Raptor man said we'll be getting the bird back after rehab because he (it's a young Male) needs to be released back into the area where he has already established a territory. So it's not the last we'll see of him. In fact today I noticed another Sparrow Hawk hunting not 200yds away across the field opposite which may well be his mate.

Can I please ask what everyone does for regular flea treatments please?

I currently do a spot on once a month which does fleas and worms on both my mini sausages.

I'm thinking of using a flea collar as they can be more cost effective.

I don't trust my vet who I know over charges coz they're a business so thought I'd you guys what you do with your pooches. :)

We use Frontline flea and tick on our cocker spaniel.

Ours have a tablet - Bravecto - once every 3 months. Very effective and costs £30-£35 depending on body weight (ours are 12.7kg and 17kg).
