*** Show us your Dogs ***

There is too much information nowadays, 12 years ago there was less than half on the internet than there is now about dogs and other pets. All dogs are different, some may take a day or two to get used to a crate as a nice safe place some might just think of it as cage to be locked up in, how you approach things is all down to the dog. Toby here, now sits 90% of the time on voice command without a treat, and using just hand signal, I reckon 50% so far. Trying him with a whistle for recall but I think that will have to wait a week or so before actually trying properly, he is still exploring the garden and house = distractions.

Best thing to do is find a website/YT channel that suits your breed and try those methods instead of taking snippets from 10s of sites that all give different ways of training. Only you know your dog. maybe enrol in classes. I may do that with Toby, definitely taking him to Chatsworth county show next year to try out trials for the pet owner, not doing it properly, no time for that.

Maddies started to get a bit needy with attention.
She'll grab my hand and drag me to the living room carpet and make me sit down next to her while she chews on a toy.

I know the experts will say I shouldn't be enforcing this sort of behaviour, but I'll be damned if it isn't cute.

Inoculation booster time this evening. I jabbed all ten dogs, in the twilight, the usual pansy dog made out he was having his head cut off. He'd fight anything, but show him the needle and he's all but wetting himself :) Still got all my fingers and I didn't manage to inoculate myself against distemper or anything.

If they aren't on strike the bin men will be muttering about those druggies in that bungalow again... ;)

Glad I don't have to pay for that lot! Still, maybe as a DIY exercise it's cheaper?

When crate training mine from about 8-16 weeks or so I set my alarm every 2-3 hours and went down, carried him outside and let him do his business. As the weeks went on that time reduced until I'd leave him for much longer. I think by the time he was 30 weeks or so there were no more house incidents (was very seldom!). He never once messed in his crate and at 20 months now he still prefers sleeping in it (we don't let him upstairs). Now first thing when I let him out of the crate he lies on a chair in the living room and looks at me as if to say why did you wake me.

I do it differently. I let him go the night without going down to let him out. I have done this with 3 Labs. obviously, each dog and breed are different but so far we have had him 9 days and he is sleeping through from lets say, 10/11pm till 6/7am with just one wee in his crate now which I will assume is from when he wakes up, as I have to get dressed and have a slash myself. I think he did a poo 2 days ago but that was probably because he woke may at 7am and I went for a slash but it was a super long one and I could hear him crying but I was too late getting to him lol.

We are also leaving him for longer periods when we go out. He will have to get used to being left for at least 90 minutes in the morning and 90 minutes afternoon due to the school runs I do. We went to ASDA a bit ago and we were gone an hour and he didn't mess his crate. He's now telling us when he needs to go out side for a wee or poo now, I think that started 4 days ago. So far we have 2 wee accidents in the house and one poo since he started to tell us. That was from him getting excited to see us and when we let him out we left the door open so he came back in to see us but shut the living room door as we were sorting the kids out.

Its all about routine and we are slowly getting there. Did my first poo patrol in the garden this morning, lost count after 20. I also cut the grass as Its not been done since summer, not massively long, but having it cut makes poo patrol much easier. I mean cutting grass 2 days before December???? Nice mild day so why not lol.

I've been 'chomping at the bit' to post in this thread for a few weeks now :D

Everyone, I'd like you to meet the newest, and youngest, member of our family. She came home to us today. She's a KC registered yellow lab we've named Libby and she's exactly 8 weeks old. She's had a fab day exploring and smelling her new surroundings as well as playing with her dozens of new toys.

Anyway, here she is:

To say I'm totally smitten already is an understatement. The Mrs and I haven't had a dog since we were kids, so this is also a new learning experience for us and our kids.

Hope you enjoy.

Cheers,

FB..

A puppy at Christmas, the kids (and their parents) couldn't wish for more. Good luck with her, she looks adorable!
Thanks Chris, she is gorgeous. The 4 of us are overwhelmed with joy.

Although, I must stress. The fact it's approaching Christmas is purely a coincidence of timings. We've been on the lookout for a pooch for some years now and haven't been able to commit due to our circumstances (never being at home being the main one). It's only now that our circumstances have more aligned with the needs of such an undertaking, have we finally been able to commit.

If only more people took this approach, dogs homes would be less full :(

@FBi7
Shes a cutie. Congratulations. How was she last night? Are you crating her?
It took 2 nights for our Toby to settle in his crate without crying. 3 weeks tomorrow we have had him. Can't believe we have had him that long already.

Cheers mate.

She was fab last night. Yes, we are crating her. She was quite tired last night, literally nodding dog, so we put her to bed at 2000. There was the odd whimper during the night and she woke up properly at about half 3 this morning. Mrs up at 4 for work anyway, so no big deal about the early hour. She's had a few snoozes today, so hopefully try and put bedtime back a little tonight.

Toby has his second vaccs today and the vet is literally 50 yards round the corner. Is is worth walking him there or carry him. I know there is a small risk, probably 6-8 dogs walk daily on the route I will take. Suck it up an carry him you think?

If he's lightweight maybe carry, but otherwise let him walk.
