Intuos 2 has been around a few years, bought one of them new back in 2002.

If funds allowed I would look for a Intuos 3, if really lucky you might even find a Intuos 4 cheap, can get some bargains on the bay, just need to look several times a day, as things are always changing.

Some of the best artists I've seen stand by the intuos2 and refuse to upgrade, I'll be buying one(A5/A4 presumably).

I'm still using my trusty Bamboo. Perfect alongside the Macbook screen resolution.

The Intuos 2 is abit old now, closing in on 3 generations old infact. The same specs can be found in the latest Bamboo units, although the Intuos 2 had more sizes available. No doubt they're a decent unit, but I'd suspect any that you pick up 2nd hand will be in poor condition; probably a factor in why they sell for ~10-£50 on the bay. Buying into something so old and worn sullies your experience to...
If I was new to the market now I'd probably opt for the 'Bamboo Pen' or 'Bamboo Pen & Touch' if I wanted the express keys.

I wish I had the cash to just dump on the Cintiq 24HD, along with the skill, to justify buying one.

It just looks pure fun to drawn on.

started some others today, batman is still unfinshed buy too tired now lol

^ That is really awesome!

What is the current software people find best to use with tablets?

I use (99%) Adobe Photoshop CS5.1, which came as part of the Adobe CS5 master collection. I use Corel Painter 12 sometimes, but usually just as a mess about so I'm familiar with it.

The only other piece of software I actually use in my work is Autodesk Sketchbook Pro 2011 and thats only when I do Cars.

Hey Lance, can't remember if this was asked before or not, but did you start out by just playing around, or did you look at those online 'classes' they do for digital artists?

I already had some experience in traditional art before going digital. When I went digital, in 2010, I didn't use any tutorials, I purely did trial and error, my first full image I drew was a piece of Fanart for WoW here:-http://fc03.deviantart.net/fs70/i/2010/143/7/5/World_Breaker_by_Optinium.jpg It was done with a Bamboo One:D

I look at it now and I cringe abit, but it was a really good exercise, I just tried a tool, if I didn't like it I deleted what I'd done and then tried another tool.

Since starting University though later the same year, I've put a lot of hours into doing digital stuff such as studies and assignment work. The tutorials created by our tutors I tend to ignore as it's stuff I've already tried through practice.

Painting digitally is easy enough, it's the thought processes behind designing and making creative decisions which are what make 'Great' pieces of art. Stuff such as knowing your anatomy, perspective, colour theory, composition etc...

In summary, I found learning the software to be very quick and easy, as you just learn by using, I personally wouldn't recommend a 'class' for it. However I would highly recommend a class/course that teaches you the fundamentals.
This doesn't ring true for everyone though and I'm certain others on the forum will have varying opinions, I'm purely stating what I've found works.

Good Luck:D

Anyone know what a wacom Pen Touch is like? Would that be a good starter? Or is it nothing more than a glorified touch pad?

I bought my brother one last year for his birthday (Bamboo Pen and Touch CTH-460). I had to use it one weekend for some uni work when I was visiting home. It's a nice unit for a beginner, that's why I bought it him, build quality is decent and it has a nice feel to the surface. It was abit small for me personally but it got the job done.

I have no real clue fella:(

The only advice I can give is just my opinion. I wouldn't bother personally with a Intuos 2, they're old and really outdated. I wouldn't pay anymore then £45 for a Bamboo Fun 2nd Hand as for not much more you can get similar units.
Some Intuos 3 tablets still fetch £150 as they're still really well specified units. They're probably still the best 4:3 tablets apart from the Cintiq 21ux.
Intuos 4 are current line, although they have had a revision since they were released. The first units had a hard-wearing surface which wore stylus nibs really quickly, you might find one of these models cheaper.

ALSO Go onto Wacom's eStore, they sell some ex-demo units, have a look something might tickle your fancy.

Lance, the life drawing is really strong. I would say stronger than your concept pieces right now.

Here is a wip robot concept and a bit more on a painting this weekend.

Cheers man, I reckon that's mainly due to things being easier to identify and draw when reduced to pure value as opposed to using colour. A thing I've been looking a lot into recently is colour theory and lighting which I'm sure shows if you look at my work from 18 months ago as opposed to now. That and all the concept things are from the head with no real reference.

I'm really liking the robot to fella, once coloured get some reflections and highlights on it^^ Should look sweet.
