Hey Lance, can't remember if this was asked before or not, but did you start out by just playing around, or did you look at those online 'classes' they do for digital artists?
I already had some experience in traditional art before going digital. When I went digital, in 2010, I didn't use any tutorials, I purely did trial and error, my first full image I drew was a piece of Fanart for WoW here:-
http://fc03.deviantart.net/fs70/i/2010/143/7/5/World_Breaker_by_Optinium.jpg It was done with a Bamboo One
I look at it now and I cringe abit, but it was a really good exercise, I just tried a tool, if I didn't like it I deleted what I'd done and then tried another tool.
Since starting University though later the same year, I've put a lot of hours into doing digital stuff such as studies and assignment work. The tutorials created by our tutors I tend to ignore as it's stuff I've already tried through practice.
Painting digitally is easy enough, it's the thought processes behind designing and making creative decisions which are what make 'Great' pieces of art. Stuff such as knowing your anatomy, perspective, colour theory, composition etc...
In summary, I found learning the software to be very quick and easy, as you just learn by using, I personally wouldn't recommend a 'class' for it. However I would highly recommend a class/course that teaches you the fundamentals.
This doesn't ring true for everyone though and I'm certain others on the forum will have varying opinions, I'm purely stating what I've found works.
Good Luck
