We have 2 kittens (brother and sister, kittens from a rescue centre) and on Monday the boy got neutered. We have had them both about a month now.

He came home the same day and he has been fine (apart from the cone of shame) but his sister now hisses at him, does not want to know him or want him anywhere near her anymore (she is not spayed).

Before he was neutered they always where together, playing together or sleeping along each other.

At times she can be ok with him but as soon as she smells his behind she starts hissing at him again and repeating the above.

I am seeing the vet tomorrow as he is having his 3 day check up after the operation so will bring it up then and see what they say but thought I would ask here and see if anyone had come across this.

Its like she knows its her brother but as soon as she smells his behind\cent its not his brother (Hormone change from the operation maybe).

EDIT - I forget to mention that the girl also went to the vets at the same time and had her 2nd jab, he stayed there, was neutered and also had his 2nd jab and came home 3 hours later.

Interesting that they still use cones. My local vets do not. They seem to have mastered some new technique that doesn't require anything. They just need to be kept in overnight. Even my female didn't have a cone, although I think she was supposed to be kept in for a day or two (she was too young to go out anyway).

Well, he looks like an alien now and probably smells weird too. It will probably wear off after a few days.

The hormone changes kick in after months, not days, so I don't think it's that. More likely to be antiseptic and the weird looking collar.

I forgot to update this thread but once the cone was gone they where back to their normal selves running around like idiots and doing all sorts of crazy things.

Seems like that she did not like the cone of shame, our vet still used them and after his check up said we can leave it on or take it off

They rely very heavily on scent their sense of smell is only slightly bettered by a dog's and their eyesight isn't that good close up a consequence of their large eyes adapted for night vision

Ember could use some happy thoughts, she's feeling very sorry for herself stuck in a cage for the next 6 weeks or so while her pelvis knits back together and she recovers from surgery after being hit by a car :(

Awww. All the very best for her...

That happened to one of mine, many years ago. It was a really miserable six weeks for her, but she made a full recovery and everything was soon forgotten.
You know, she was really lucky. Sooner or later, a cat will encounter a car and it's throw the dice time. This is a harsh, terrible lesson for her, but she will learn and be much more sensible in future.

We don't stop to think just how many loved ones are destroyed by our need to race about all over the place.

Thanks all, yes she's a stubborn little cowbag, she already wants to get up and go exploring every time we open the cage to give her medicine and clean her tray and bedding, seems to be healing up well so far :)

As you say, very lucky indeed to come away with (relatively) minor and survivable injuries (not to mention the timing, 2 months later and we would have had to pay an extra 20% excess on the insurance!)

Not sure how much she will learn her lesson though, we've been looking at "cat proofing" the back garden, but it isn't cheap!

Not sure I could handle an outdoor cat. The stress and worry when they stay out would be too much. So glad my two were too scared to even leave the house.

I’ve lost a cat like that before. He came home after not returning at night and was destroyed. Took him to the vets and they said best is we put him to sleep, no chance of walking again etc. I said never again and my two cats are now limited to garden only.

Sky the older one would always try to jump the fence but as soon as he heard a noise he was straight back inside. Was still painful having to get them both put to sleep due to old age complications.

Yeah, we've already decided no more cats, we're not having much luck with them recently, one of the others disappeared a couple of weeks ago. She's on the CCTV at 05:45, we open the door to get them in for some food at 6 and she's nowhere to be seen :(

My older cat never even attempted to jump fences. The golden kitten we got who’s now just over a year old is crazy. She nearly escaped a few times so we’re not letting her out. She gets too excited about birds etc and just runs after them head first. Last straw was when she saw a cat and went full crazy, I managed to grab her just as she jumped on the fence and received a good beating. Claws in my face etc as she got scared. Was the last straw. We’ll wait until she’s older and calmer.

Not something we want to do but sadly the road next to us is quite busy and it’s even the breeder recommended we keep her as house cat only as these British shorthairs are too friendly and get stolen all the time. She’s extremely cute and nosy too so she’d get herself in trouble quickly.
