The epitome of why my girlfriend doesn't like the idea of me buying an ST :D

Struggling to decide which car to take to work at the moment.....

Hi,

I am considering either a 645 or a 650CI, I am wondering if you have found it to be as ruiness to run as I'd expect it to be?

MPG etc doesnt worry me, neither does basics such as brakes etc as they will be more than average anyway. Just unsure as to their reliability as now they are getting a little older and into the hands of people less likely to keep on top of servicing.

Kind regards,

Well after nearly a month in the garage at Performance Autoworks, I finally have my car back! To say I'm happy is an understatement.

I've had the following done:
  • Oil change.
  • Bypass faulty SAS valve.
  • Replace caliper seals, as well as a rear piston.

Fit the following:
  • Ohlins & geo setup.
  • SuperPro rear ARB.
  • Replace Girodisc rings.
  • Carbotech XP10 pads front.
  • New Castrol fluid.
  • Brake ducting.

The ride on the Ohlins is, as you'd expect, superb. A bit firmer than the standard B4's however the quality of the ride feels better, straight away I can feel it's more planted and roll has been drastically reduced. I haven't pushed the car properly on the road as it's been busy on the way back but it does feel a little understeery, might be as I can't really push it hard enough for the AYC to make a difference. I'll have to see how it is over the next few weeks or maybe see if there's a trackday coming up as I have a few weeks off work between contracts.

I don't know what geo settings Performance Autoworks have dialled in but the car feels a lot more pointy and more eager to turn in. Perhaps it's a combination of the Ohlins, new rear ARB and geo, I don't know, but it's much nicer. A few mm has me changing lanes now.

The pads are superb, cold bite is good and they do slow the car down a lot as I found out as I approached roundabout at the end of the A417 where it goes from two lanes into one. I came round the corner and the traffic was backed right up so I had to brake quite firmly. Very impressed with them. They are also no where near as noisy as I thought they'd be, no more than any other uprated pad that I've tried. The ducts aren't from the front of the car which would be most ideal, but that would involve removing some of the undertray which I wasn't keen on doing, so it's actually getting air from the little vanes on the undertray which it has out of the factory. Nice supply of cool air from down there which should help cooling the brakes down.

Some pics - yes I know I need new centre caps. They're on the list. As is a visit to Norris Designs on Tuesday to check the map. I'll get the SLR out once I've given the car a proper clean.

I've only had the 650i about a month so I can't comment on the long term reliability. No issues so far and I don't think I'll be faced with many unexpected repair bills. The engine is tried and tested and the only thing I was really warned about was to look for white smoke when the engine is cold.

MPG has settled on about 17 which is better than the Mustang.

That 650i... One of the best BMW shapes. Extremely unpopular opinion I know.

I like Jezza's explanation of how they were designed. Didn't it go something like "The guy was really old and/or drunk, and when he got to the back he keeled over and died, and someone chucked a blanket on the boot and said 'Done!'"? :p

The one which replaced it is a great looking car though IMO... :)
