Just because a car isn't worth a lot of money doesn't mean its instantly crap.

That was not my point and never will be - I have never been one to criticise a car purely because it isnt worth a lot of money.

More the fact that any Escort is really worth no more than £500, meaning that simply buying a GTI is surely a far better idea than taking a bottom of the range model and making it... not quite a GTI?

Maybe didn't have the cash, or perhaps enjoys modding? i mean it wouldn't cost a lot. everyone's circumstances are different, as are their opinions on what looks good etc.

So why is the MK3 ok and the MK4 not considering they are vastly similar looks and engines wise and the only redeeming model was the turbo?

The Mk3 was half decent for it's time the Mk4 was a barely warmed over rehash. I wouldn't call a crudely turbocharged CVH engine a redeeming in any sense of the word.

There's nothing wrong with a nice original Mk3 RS1600i or turbo if that's what floats your boat.

Crudely? The CHV engine is notably smoother with FI and it certainly wasn't a bodge job as you're implying. The MK4 doesn't look anywhere near as dated as the MK3. Having said that, every FWD Escort is crap in one way or another.

See you have a fabia vrs magicboy, What's it like if you don't mind be asking? I had a skoda Octavia vrs that i used to get to and from camp in germany, really like it.

I like it. Quick enough to be fun, comfy on a long journey, does everything I need it to and it's cheap to run.

[TW]Fox will be along in a minute to call it a tepid diesel city car with a horrid badge I expect.

It would have to be better - the standard CVH was awful even in 1986. They were rough as **** and turned the oil to goop if you so much as missed a 6k service. If it burnt less petrol than oil above 80k then it was a miracle. Compared to the other options around at the time like the 16V Astra (mmmm red top) or a Mazda 323 turbo it's stone age engineering.

Oooh Dunnell... what was he getting out of it? And black top or silver top?

Used to have a few of his bits on the Westfield, but now use a local engine-builder and Matt Simpson for exhaust.

Hi westfield2, yeah it was mine, was in the mk6 escort, was a silver top. tbh was very quick for what is was. only really used it for trackdays at combe and local rally events. was 197bhp when i finished, but did a few things myself, more aggressive cams, new full ss exhaust etc. in the end it got to a point where i couldn't use it anymore(on rally events at least) due to it having no grip at all when your foot was down. its spends most of it's life locked away now. which is a pity. still nice to get it out every now and again, if only to hear those thottle bodies open up. lol :)
