Show Us Your Motors!

My one main chip is on my bonnet, small but down to the metal. What product are you using to touch them up?

But its almost impossible to match...the supplied paint is in 3 stages. Stage 1 is the one I found matches closest to liquid yellow  Stage 2 (with the pearl in) is just way too dark(it needs lightening up several shades to be a close enough match)...stage 3 is the clearcoat product. I have tried 3 different liquid yellow touch up kits from different companies now & spent about £150 on them all! Its simply not possible to get a great match as they mix it too dark & the sunlight fades it over time. From 2M away mine are impossible to see....but I know they are there...its so hard to do this job as triple layer & your never going to be able to match the Renault robot booth sprayers...

I can see why they want to do the entire panel but its overkill for such small areas IMO. Best thing you can do is find a really talented sprayer they should be able to perform a blend & make it almost invisible but many IMO give up too easily as not enough money in it for them to spend some time on this type of job!

I am not giving up on mine though I am sure I can do a better job so will revisit when the air temps are warmer in a few weeks then try some mixing experiments to lighten the Stage 2 paint up a little by mixing it with Stage 1 at the same time! See how that turns out!

Its a massive PITA job as takes 2-3 hours minimum (even on a tiny little area) as you have to build it up using thin layers. Wait for it to dry. Repeat until you have filled most of the chip. Then wait some more for it to dry then use 2000-3000 grit wet sand paper to smooth further then try to buff with a polisher & some light polishing compound.

That's pretty much all a pro will attempt you need to find a real expert who could easily blend this type of repair & do an almost invisible job by blending & touching in using clearcoat & a machine polisher but those type of experienced sprayers are really hard to find (but they do exist!).

When its sunny enough again in a few days I will try to take some detailed pics to show you my results though!!

Thanks for all the info.. I have ultimately been put off the thought :D I shall leave it be I think. It's just going to happen on a daily driver. It's a shame as once you notice it, it's hard to not see but from a few feet back others wouldn't know

Spent an hour and half washing the M340i today. 20 minutes later after a drive into town to grab some groceries and its filthy again!!! Nice living in a rural location, but the amount of mud and dirt on the roads with the tractors going in and out fields is irksome :p

Looks great... that grey really compliments the aggressiveness of the front end :D

My new family wagon:

It's the GT spec and has rather a lot of kit: adaptive cruise, HUD, CarPlay, heated and cooled seats with power and memory, dynamic LED headlights, surround view cameras, Bose hifi, power tailgate, on top of all the usual crap that modern cars come with now such as road sign detection, lane keep assist, emergency braking assist etc.
It wouldn't be my first choice of car, far from it, but it will do the job and will be comfortable. Wish it was automatic but when presented with both an auto and a manual, the Mrs went with the manual. At least it's a really good manual with a positive shift and short throw. The car is actually really rather pleasant to drive. It certainly drives a lot better than our current CR-V.

These are the after results...I think I can make it a bit better also with more layers in warmer weather with higher air temps I will revisit.

Then yesterday went over an unavoidable large pothole on a small B road & this happened
So I just went & ordered a new set of 4 Fujilight's as 8KG unsprung mass less weight so better handling, better brake performance as more air will enter the duct & the cars already perfect handling performance will be a little faster still! OEM component so no need to tell the insurance company either!
