That blue murky stuff in the distance on the horizon is the Atlantic Ocean ;) bit of a mist around it does not photograph too well from a long distance away!

New Fujilight Alloys (8KG lighter overall unsprung mass so in theory car should consume less fuel......) not finding it handles any different though! Too late now I cannot send them back...brake temps improved though as they channel more air onto the brakes so again in theory braking performance should be better....! £2.2K all in not cheap either

New Chrome Mirror Covers also! Its ok I will live on soup & bread for a few months after this little lot £££

Basket case must be a relative term I guess
If it is 1 it'll be going back to the dealer, i bought it online/over the phone without seeing it so due to distance selling regulations i have a 14 day return window for a no quibble refund. i'm really hoping it's ok!

It's a 20 year old AMG so it'll definitely be throwing big bills.
I'm hoping i get lucky and it doesn't :p i won't be doing big miles in it or thrashing it around. i have a 3 month warranty on it and like i said it'll get refunded if there's anything seriously wrong with it. the dealer has told me up front the auxilliary battery could do with replacing and the rear tyres haven't got much life left, 285/30/19's @ £340 a pop

I'd seriously do your research. A 3 months warranty won't give you squat given all the get out clauses w.r.t wear and tear. It's a 20 year old car!
Warning heeded! I'm going to book it into a local merc specialist for a check over which hopefully will educate me on whether to keep it or not.

Is the car being delivered to you?

Reason I ask is that, as far as I’m aware, even though you paid a deposit for it online/over the phone, if you go and pick it up, you lose your distance selling advantage.

This was something I looked at when buying a car recently.

yes it's being delivered 100%, i made sure of that as i recently learnt that if u view it in the flesh before sale or collect it then distance selling law doesn't apply.

just to add, the age of it doesn't completely scare me. i owned a 1995 nissan skyline gtr r33 in 2019 for about a year and it never missed a beat. i guess with this merc there's more that can go wrong though.

My garage is full of plasterboard and tiles, and mrs is away, I'm doing nursery runs so the car is on the drive at the moment (complete with **** parking).

Use this clause and return it.

SLs of this era are a superb car but you will end up spending the purchase price of the car running it. Perhaps that sum annually if you are unlucky.

Honestly, I'd have one in a heartbeat if they weren't so insane to run, like most/all Mercedes cars are from this era. I've owned two, and I'll never own another one no matter how tempting they get when I've had a few and browsing them on eBay. You've been warned!

Oh and to add to the above, you've gotta be an extra special kind of mental to buy one that's been written off TWICE - Cat C and Cat D. Honestly, with every possible alarm bell/klaxon/siren in the entire world simultaneously going off, that wouldn't be enough alarms. Not only that, but the faulty fuel gauge could be the sender if you're lucky, they are only a few hundred quid.. More likely the SAM is underwater, which is not cheap and is hassle++++. Or this is the gauge cluster showing the early signs of failure, especially prevalent after "mileage correction" has been done.

Put your trainers on and start running as fast as you can.

Wait - that SL55 has been written off twice?! Run for the hills!
