4k miles a year at 30mpg: £70 a month
4k miles a year at 60mpg: £35 a month

The savings are huge - its totally worth changing to a hybrid with those savings.

Change jobs, save even more money then!

The £20 I put in at the start of the month is still going today :p

Also when you do go out for a drive it's just for that, to enjoy a drive instead of sitting behind a car's arse for 40mins each morning/arfternoon.

:p

No, it's a 50% saving.

But percentage alone overstates the effect, don't you think?

50% of a big number is a big saving. 50% of a small number is a small saving.

Phew, I was beginning to think you'd gone off the rails.

Doing 60mpg is all well and good but at 4k a year you save £400 which will make next to no difference to your total cost of ownership (depreciation, servicing, tyres, tax, repairs etc...).

you should know it makes a heck of a difference when your a student more money for other important things such as booze and food :p

Example seeing as some of you are still struggling with the fact I actually wanted one.
Type R
insurance was around 500
Tax 265 ish
Petrol per month £130
Big service due this year £400
Tyres was needing 2 at £140

Yearly cost as a student = petrol 1560 other costs £1305

Prius

Petrol = 50 quid max
Insurance £280
Tax £10
Tyres 4 brand new on it with car will last a long time but even then are £55 quid a corner
Service full toyota service due in a year so £180

Costs petrol year = 600 Other = 470 with a full service

Thats a very simple idea and obviously as you can see just a little cost savings especially as a student but meh at the end of the day I'm enjoying it immensely

If you want to do it on the cheap why drop 4k on hybrid? Buy a normally aspirated petrol hatch, it won't break, it won't cost as much to buy and you'll still get 45mpg. It'd take years to recoup the extra spent on a hybrid. The warranty on the Prius must be almost up too, how much does a new battery pack cost?

Never understood this sort of argument when presented in the context of buying a car that costs anything more than £500 to £1000...

If £35 a month makes a significant difference to your quality of life, why on earth would you drop £4000 on a car?

I didnt drop 4k on a car I sold my Type R for £4000 and got the prius for just under £4k cost me nothing to change but a train ticket.

Oo there's the battery pack issue wonderd when someone would mention that. it still has 2 years left on the battery warranty and with all the case studies done they are averaging about 250 to 350k life span before even starting to degrade when used as taxis in canada and america.

Well you kinda did.

I sold my Type R for £4000

So at this point you had £4000.

and got the prius for just under £4k

At this point you then lost that £4000.

This is known as 'dropping £4k on a car'

:p

To be honest though I'm finding it hard to find that many issues with a £4k 06 Prius if its in decent nick. It seems like a heck of a thing for the money.

lol well if you look at it that way I supose I could have bought a damn 500 quid shed and potted about in it. Again we seem to be missing the point that I actually wanted one and didnt cost me any more to change. I know it seems strange to some of the people posting here but sometime you just want something and go for it :p

Had it in at Toyota for a full going over yesterday and they did a recall that been missed on it as well for a water pump for the hybrid cooling. Said it was in fantastic condition and was just due an interim service in about 6months for oil. On an other note dealer was very pleasant didn't cost a thing let me have a test drive in a new one while I was there and then dropped me off at the local dobbies and picked me up when the car was ready was actually quite surprised as had never really been to a main dealer for work on a car they even washed and hoovered it :)

Just because it cost you nothing to change from a Civic Type-R, doesn't mean you haven't just spent £4000 (or a just under) on a car

sometime you just want something and go for it :p

So why the need to try and defend it with silly comments about how the £35 saving of fuel is going to make a big difference?

For your first part consider me enlightened as fox as already told me :p and secondly I was merely stating why I found it justified and its all light hearted in jest no one here is being down right rude or unruly it is after all what the forum is for.
