Well, I'd looked at quite a few ST220s that were in budget, pre-facelifts and facelifts. I really, really wanted a facelift saloon, but these are like hen's teeth (especially in my budget). I thought I'd found one, but when I went to collect he car, it turned out that some of the work I asked to be undertaken before I collected the car had only been half-arsedly done, and there was a potentially ££££ gearbox problem that wasn't apparent on the first test drive, so I walked away.
Somewhat deflated, I traveled across London to see this 406 Coupe. It was a bit overpriced, but I thought I'd give it a chance (the 406 Coupe was on my shortlist). All of the ST220s I'd seen were dogs in one way or another, and myself, and particularly the wife, were getting fed up with turning up looking at cars where apparently the clutch and flywheel had been changed, but there was no documentation to substantiate this, or the car was ex-fleet, missing history etc.
Anyway, I turned up at the trader's yard, and couldn't see the Coupe anywhere, but it turned out he'd taken the effort to actually de-tetris it from his yard and put it to one side. I could tell on approaching it that this was a bloody clean car.
So, to sum up:
- 406 Coupe 3.0 V6 SE manual D9 210bhp
- 2000 (W)
- 1 owner from new
- 5 good Michelin Pilot Sport tyres
- FSH
- Tax to end of December
- Full MOT
- Mountain of receipts
- Loads of gadgets
- Stonkingly nice Brembo brakes
- Cambelt good for 4 years
- Recent new exhaust parts
- New fuel pump
I paid £2250 for it, which was slightly more than I'd hoped, but for such a well looked after car I think it warranted the extra ~£500 over similar cars. It's easily the cleanest car I've had (apart from a brand new company car), and would easily pass for as 4 years old or thereabouts. Everything is lovely about it, although the speedo seems to be intermittently up the spout (cheap easy fix).
No, it's not an ST220, but it cost me over £1k less than my budget which really worked in it's favour.
