And just to lower the tone even further...

Excuse the mobile phone pic.

Fitted my Mongoose de-cat pipe today to match the rest of the exhaust. It may look like an old Rover, but it certainly doesn't go or sound like one!

I love the thing. Up to now it's been super reliable, epic fun and costs absolute peanuts to run.

Lets not forget guys, 0-60 isn't all it's cracked up to be unless you're doing traffic light GP. 99% of the time on the road you'll be on the move when you put the power down which changes things a lot.

I've done 5.5s 0-60 in my 300bhp Fiat Coupe, timed with a Racelogic vbox

I would imagine it is lighter than an Astra and also it has a Viscous LSD where I'm not sure if the Astra has an LSD at all?

LSDs make a whole lot of difference in putting the power down, especially in FWD cars.

A little lighter then an Astra (1310kg vs 1393), and LSD does help a lot too, yes. Also the torque is quite a lot lower, 280lb/ft in my case, which makes things a bit easier. It was more of a response to the people saying about how FWD won't go much below 6s.

An LSD a proper mechanical one like you have makes a huge difference. Intact putting an LSD in a powerful FWD car is one of the best upgrades you can do. Quaife TBD units can probably be got for about 1k. :)

But stating an Astra even with 300BHP is as quick as an M3 is just not true.

Its like me saying my car is faster than an R35 GTR because when I booted my car he could not keep up for the 5 seconds I was in the loud pedal. The detail I need to add is I was in 2nd gear and ready, he was in 4th and not quite as ready,as such not equal at all. Reality is my car is nowhere near as quick as a GTR.

An e46 M3 (340 odd bhp) v a 300 odd bhp Astra would be fairly close on the road (as in the M3 wouldn't pull away like the Starship Enterprise) but I'd imagine on a track it would be a different story.

Either way I'd take a RWD car over a FWD car any day of the week with that sort of power.

E46 M3 agreed! But the guy was saying his Astra was as quick as the new M3 which it simply is not even close.

It is one of those awkward sorts of cars in that if you don't mind the running costs then you probably have more money to spend on a car than it was worth. As such it probably isn't going to sell quickly.

Everything sells quickly at the right price, you could have put it in for a few hundred over what you got at auction and sold it instantly. Amazed you auctioned it, especially as most people think anything privately entered into a motor auction is done so because it's ****ed.

How much did you get?

Picked my new car up this weekend. After looking at various hatches, I decided I wanted something more reasonable to run than the hot hatches I was looking at and went for a Renaultsport Twingo 133 in the end. Not massively fast, but great fun to drive and hope to push it a bit more once I'm a little more comfortable with it.

Sorry for the crappy pic I took at the dealers :o

Looks nice, why not the Clio?

Test drove the Clio (192) and it FELT fairly sedate until silly speeds IMO and the running costs weren't worth the extra to me (in particular the sub 30mpg owners report). I enjoyed driving the Twingo more than I did the Clio, though I have no doubt it's a lot slower, it's a hell of a lot of fun

I am under no delusion that I couldn't have got more by selling it privately but I was happy to take less for the car for the convenience of shifting it quickly and without me spending my limited free time dealing with the people that it would have attracted. Plus rightly or wrongly I wouldn't have been comfortable selling it privately due to a few issues that it had.

TBH I would do the same again if I found myself in the same position... although putting it in on the night of the Olympics opening ceremony might have been a bit of a tactical error as there were about 30 cars less than usual and it was very quiet for a Friday night :o

As for the price... as you seem to think I'd have got hundreds more by selling it privately why don't you tell me what you think I got for it ;)

Mapping done!

295bhp and 335lbft

Lovely smooth progressive drive, overboost of 20psi and holding 18psi

Quicker than a new M3 in a straight line :D

shame you're not near Manchester, wouldn't mind having a quick real world test to see how much faster than me you are :)
