Killed it how?
Shucking a WD elements external drive for Synology

Changed power supplies and forgot to swap out the old the power cable for the sata drive (both are modular PSU). The sata power cable is identical on both PSUs so just didn't pay enough attention
Did it kill the drive/drives?
It killed the one drive (8Tb) that had the old cable from the old PSU.
Must have fried the internals because now it's completely dead.
Damn. RIP.
Could have also burned TVS diodes into short.

Yes damn indeed.
I'm not overly sad though as I did have 80% of it backed up and it was only my movies rather than any personal data.
I did need a bigger drive as it was getting full and was waiting for the 14Tb to drop in price so it just accelerated my decision
Possibly.
If damage is limited to those TVS diodes and possible fuses it should be repairable.
If you have multimeter you could check, if PCB has such components and how they measure.
I've stupidly bought an 8tb wd my book and 2 wd 5tb portable drives!

Are the 5tb 2.5"? If so I think they're not shuckable due to having USB PCBs.
They're very likely SMR too.

Shucked two 14Tb WD Elements the last few days.
They run cool - around 25*C
Very quiet drives which together produce about the same noise as one of my WD Red's which were also quiet drives.
Transfer rates im getting are 200mb/s
