Sigma 35mm f1.4....?!!

I have not had a chance to rub my 35mm yet, tonight :)

But Fixation have replied back saying:

Thanks for your email. That I think it's a stain (mould?) which we might be able to clean off depending if its inside the sealed group or outside, Please send it over to be properly examined, then we will provide estimate on usual basis.

Not sure it looks like mould as it's only visible from an angle but I'll have to get a magnifying glass and take a closer look tonight.

If it is still there, I'll send it in, it's going to be horrific not having the 35 on the body for any length of time but I have no shoots for this month so should be in the clear for that.

I have silica gel in the bag anyway which is why I don't think it's mould. That and the fact that these circles are perfect circles with a perfect hole in the middle, like a Polo. I know nature has its beauty but a perfect mould-orb set on my lens? I don't buy it!

Tonight!

Edit*

Additional Eclipse fluid rubbing didn't budge the halo. It must be under the coated layer then. Sending into Fixation tomorrow.

here's a better pic, I also found 2 more in this picture, the different lighting angle and shown them up!

The fact that it's a perfect circle/halo has me wondering/questioning what exactly it is.

Have you taken it out in the rain at all or in high humidity atmosphere?

Is it on certain angles mrk?
Certain angles and under certain light, looking at it normally they're invisible. I used the flash for the above pics because normal shots don't show them up. As earlier as well, they don't show up in pictures or affect lens performance.

It has been out in light rain yes, I'd call it spitting. A while back during a group shot so no longer than 5 minutes during the shot. The hood was on though and the rain sat on the outer body only which was then wiped indoors and used for the rest of the day so no way anything should have gotten in. It has no been used in any high humidity areas though. The 17-40L gets used in areas of heavy moisture and whatnot.

Hmm that definitely rules out what I was thinking. Surely those marks are on the inside of the front element. Just makes me wonder how they got there!?

To me it looks like they're below the coating of the front element but not inside the front element. The element looks quite thick and the halos look to be sitting right up front but since they don't budge with Eclipse it looks like they're below the AR layer.

I'll have to see what Fixation say! Can't imagine a front element replacement will be cheap though :o

Are you sure it is not a refraction from an element inside the lens that only shows up in certain angle?

If you put the lens in manual, turn the focus ring, do they disappear?

I will check this under office lighting in the morning but pretty sure it's not refraction as the halos are in the same position at all times even when focus ring is moved.

Update!

Fixation have sent over a quote for repair of £42. It's just a stain on the front element inside according to them so this will be checked and cleaned. Happy with that price and that it's not mould or anything else.

The real mystery is how it got there though... Oh well.

I can't believe you would pay £42 to fix some invisible marks that only show up in certain light, at certain angles and have no perceivable impact on photos.

I know :( But it would bug me just knowing it's there at all other times.
