Sigma 35mm f1.4....?!!

Been debating for a while wheather i should get this lens and after seeing rob's pics and lots of reviews, im pretty much sold on it .

i am also eyeing a 85L too :(

i can get the 85L and the sigma 35mm via ******* for the same price as getting the 85L from Wex!!

When i saw the price of the 85L i was shocked! Its almost 2k! worth more then my 70-200 f2.8 mk2 lol.

Anyways the pics on this thread alone is more reasons to go for this lens.

Thank you all

Pretty much my most used lens.

It is razor sharp at 1.4 and only gets sharper when you stop it down! The build quality is excellent, it has a nice weight to it and i love it! If i had to be pushed to say a negative and i mean really pushed, i would say that the bokeh can sometimes look a little "strange" but only sometimes and seeing that the Nikon equivalent is about twice the cost, not as sharp and made of cheap plastic the Sigma really is a no brainer.

Having owned a number of Sigma lenses over the years and having experienced their random quality, it really is nice to see them showing that they mean business this time with the new "global vision" lines.

The bokeh can be equally strange on Nikon and Canon 1.4 versions as well in the same scenarios :)

The pro point for the Sigma is that it has less CA, less ghosting/fringing and where it does have them they are completely removable in Lightroom.

Edge to edge sharpness is the main thing :)

No lens is ever a perfect lens, that would mean it needs no revision to update it in years to come but we know full well Sigma will release version 3 with whatever new technology is around at the time.

It's as good as a 35mm 1.4 can be though and the pros far outweigh any cons.

If it does all the right things for your shooting then go for it. No point buying a lens just because people online said it is amazing and then it only gets used a few times :p I went through that phase years back!

That's exactly why I haven't bought it. I don't use the 35mm enough to warrant buying the Sigma. Even though I can sell my 35L and buy one, it just doesn't seem worth all the hassle :D

Oh and if anyone wants an 85L BUY IT :D It's amazing. I find it so hard not to use the lens, over all my others. I've even adapted what I shoot to suit one lens, unless I absolutely cannot use it.

It's currently £1475 at Flashcamera. You can probably get £25 off if you pay by BT.

Which isn't a bad deal, for a 85L.

Slow to focus though is it not?

Slowest of all the 85mm, yes, nobody says it isn't. It's down to it focus by moving the front element, that giant piece of glass. It's fast enough for weddings for me so that's fast enough. :)

It is however VERY accurate when it gets there.

Yeah somehow I can't see myself ever wanting to pay *almost* triple the cost of the 1.4 Sigma for slower AF and more lens flare just to have a 1.2 aperture.

There are more reason not to get it than do.

But if you get the chance to try one, do it. It's like nothing else. Well, apart from Tilt/Shift lenses but that's a whole other kettle of fish.

Fast focusing isn't just exclusive to sports :p

I know there are shots I've gotten with the 85 1.4 that wouldn't have been possible on something that focused slower (e* especially with lens servo in full use) in events. I'm sure it's great. It's just not £1500~ great though in my opinion.

Edit*
It is of course user preference and all that! All this is relevant discussion :)

I still have the 85/1.8 if I want the faster focus, I kept it for that reason and in the 2 and a half years since I got the 85/1.2. I used the 1.8 once….sooooo make that what you will.

Yeah but you have a case full of lenses of which you use a couple of times :p

Along with headphones and various other gadgets. Self confessed might I add!
