Siliconslave's how to make espresso thread

It should be good for 13.50 for 350g , had to look since I was curious how they named their other coffees.
They must be from the same school as the people naming the beers (program on radio 4 this week interviewing guy who came up with perfume names including jazz, discussing the marketing criteria)

my yearly habit could be heading to 4 figures with this - still quality not quantity, but life without 4 doubles a day -

don't leave us hanging - if you know bill total can probably identify it from the cost

On espresso technique : some of the pucks have been a bit ... constipated (semed like an approprate word) so I did wonder if I might damage the edge of the filter trying to knock them out, do folks intentionally make the impact on the pf wings or even handle ?
I have a ridgeless filter so I can eject that completely if I knock too hard !

More controversially about coffee :
I am intrigued about ability to distinguish a good coffee if you are drinking it in latte style with steamed milk (same deal as a good whisky no ?) as opposed to espresso. OK I guess it is a different type of drink but is worth paying top $$ for coffee ?

I fast forwarded through one of these Greg Wallace reality tv shows (where they look at peoples shopping baskets - do people participate voluntarily) which included a ground/filter coffee tasting at an importer, where he preferred some cheaper Robusta not the more expensive Arabica.
which I think concurs with my experience where, for espresso, bar blend from my all time favourite shop (Casa del Caffé - Ventimiglia) was a mix.

I got a tamper with my machine last year, knew it was the wrong size by a couple of mm but since getting the IMS basket it seems to have have a noticeable amount of untamped grounds around the edges. This seems to be decent, and well priced (under £30 delivered)

I do NSEW tamping because my lovely motta tamper is a mm or two shy of the basket I'm using (unbranded, came with the bottomless rocket portafilter)

Regarding knocking - I knock directly on the basket against the rubber bar. Hitting the handles and/or flanges is going to damage the portafilter over time, and there isn't much room to do owt else in my knockbox anyway :E

Macho - Yum! Might have to treat myself to some of that... (and try not to look at the price too much!)

Puck ejection - i just hit the corner of basket on the edge of the bin, been doing it for at least a decade and its not hurt either the bit, basket of pf so far :D

Coffee & milk i (personally) can't stand, but i guess it brings different things out in both, no reason not to have good coffee in a late, infact in a coffee shop somewhere that does good coffee will probably use decent milk as well.

and that tampa seems pretty cheap, but i've not bought one for a good while...

That is dissapointing abou the tamper fit.
For previous discussion I had bought the ridgless IMS filter
which specced CORPO: Ø 60 mm per pressino Ø 58 mm
and so there might be nearly a mm in it, in conjunction with
'Motta Tamper - Curved Base 58mm (Wooden Handle) (Used As Demo) £9.66'
but would not want it much closer in case I scarred either

siliconslave - you have the titanium tamper too ? the sheen is nice. or ...dynamometric (spell checker failed) one

Good thinking, so these are the 4 that are left. The total cost of the bill came to £34.65. All are single estate beans, no blends.

Brazil Fazenda Ouro Verde £5.80
Tanzania Mboziab £7.20
Sumatra Aceh Tengah £7.60
Colombian Suarez £5.80
Mystery bag at 350g = £8.25

The answer is Ethiopia Layo Tiraga #170

I bought the same filter basket after you posted your experiences up - the Motta (58.4) fits in perfect with a little room so it doesn't get stuck.

On a vernier gauge my old tamper was 57mm (its also now surplus to requirements if anyone wants it).

Anyone ever bought beans from Markus Coffee near Marble Arch? If so, any recommendations?

They're the easiest for me to get to within reasonable time and their prices for freshly roasted beans look pretty good:

Personally I wouldn't buy from a place that considers President Bushariff a "celebrity" worth bragging about. Apart from that they are expensive and do not even have any cupping notes so your just blind buying when it comes to flavour.

Thanks. I'd not noticed the 'celebrity' bit but based on the lack of cupping notes, I'll look elsewhere :)

When you say expensive, are there comparatively priced, yet reputable beans in that sort of area or west of London as cheap or cheaper that you know of?

@scotland - I picked up the wrong end of the pf, and thought the pic/£30 was the ill fitting tamper

Cheers I'll add Ethiopia Layo Tiraga #170 to next Rave order , usually sync with their offers.
