Siliconslave's how to make espresso thread

I'm thinking of buying 1kg of roasted beans from Rave.
How long will the beans last before they go off? (if such a thing can happen!)

Here is the truth...

I bought 4 to 5 bags of beans at a time, 350g size, and it takes me as long as it takes to finish them. It can be as little as 1 bag a week to 1 bag a month. So it can be about 3 months in before I open the last bag.

Do I think "ewwww, that is for the bin!" ?

Nope!!!! I drink it all. Because I have no frame of reference of what that tasted like in the first day as I haven't opened it.

yes rave deal tomorrow TRICKORTREAT

About ageing I had 1kg of signature from their last deal day 28th - roasted 29/9, and I think you can smell a slight rancidity off of the bag now so that makes 4 week lifetime - just kept in the original bag folded after use, kept in cupboard.
I think taste has diminished too.

If anyone saw the gadget show a few weeks back, with the nice la marzocco linea machine (was it 12K) the genuine barista had some kind of cylindrical metal cup used to dump the grind from the grinder into the pf, and seemed to have a ridged tamper that blocked on the edge of the pf - both of those were new ideas for me.

I finally got round to getting an Aeropress and Hario Skerton to start my proper coffee journey off. I suppose I should probably go for a starter/variety pack to try some different beans out but there's obviously a lot of choice online, where's a good place to start?

This was container/tamper on gadget show
about 22" in ... so was different to dosing ring

Ok I will have to put that on my wish list to Father Christmas / send a begging letter to whoever wins gadget show pack of goodies.
(the multi-head Marzocco linea will probably need a Sizewell D to accompany it too)

Not sure whether such performance enhancing tools are permitted in the Barista championshipos the guy apparently won.

I've tried a few places but have settled on Rave now.

My current favourites are :-

Beware, you're about to start down a dark path of "oooo, lets try this one next" :D

Other places to try are

this shows how many places there are in the UK now

Its funny, i keep trying rave and not really getting along with them, personally squaremile and workshop (although expensive to buy online) are probably my top two...

That map is pretty cool though, will have to start trying some more of my local roasteries I think:

http://thelittleredroaster.co.uk/
http://www.smokeybarn.co.uk/
