Siliconslave's how to make espresso thread

So my grinder died this morning. It was a deholngi thing, but it worked well for me. I could do the same again (£45), but I think I should upgrade? It seems the only logical upgrade is the Encore at £130ish. Anything else I should consider?

For something comparable to the Encore The Wilfa Svart might be worth a look. Seems to be £110ish. For something espresso-able the Iberital MC2 is £130ish, but would be a pain to switch between grind sizes.

Oh the mc2 looks perfect! I only use espresso, so the switching isn't much of a hassle.

Great stuff! I bought one over the summer from Happy Donkey and for the price am very happy (full disclosure: I've never used any other electric grinder). Based on my research (Kev's review on Coffee Blog here is worth a look) it is on a par, if not better than the Sage Smart Grinder Pro. I think the next step up would be £250+ like one of the basic Eureka Mignon models.

My only criticism would be the little "shelf" behind the spout, which does retain some grinds. You might need to manhandle and slap it around a bit to get everything out.

Rave - bit of a discount 25% off cheaper of 2 items thur->mon VIP2020 ..... can't beat that Ooni deal though.
Used - thanks. Although that is obviously an early access Black Friday deal, which they didn't send me despite being a regular customer, so now I feel very much not like a VIP!

About to pull the trigger on one of the Rave bundles - first time using them so I have a 15% off code.

Right now it includes the Signature Blend, Colombia El Carmen and The Italian Job - now just to get them and dial-in again doh.

I’m in the market for a machine - looking at most places the one you picked up was very cheap? I think they’re at 550 now? Hoping they come down again in Black Friday. Our budget is around 4/450. Any others I should look out for in the sales?

Adam - this is back on offer at Amazon.

Hi guys,

appreciate you lot are rather high end in here, but just seen this : https://www.amazon.co.uk/Sage-SES875BKS-Barista-Express-Machine/dp/B072Q22S3J/ref=sr_1_2?crid=26U46IF0HL9FP&dchild=1&keywords=sage+the+barista+express+machine,+black+sesame&qid=1606384146&sprefix=sage+the+b,aps,166&sr=8-2

and I'm tempted, is it worthwhile or should I spend more money for a better result

all I drink is black coffee (americano?) by the bucket load

I will let someone else comment on whether more money/different machine would be better.

However, I do have this same machine. I use it for a mix of things, as well as Americano. It makes great coffee, at the end of the day for me that's what it's about. If you got the right beans (ones you enjoy) and kept with just Americano I'm sure you will see the value.

I wouldn't leave it too long though, at that price it will sell out this morning (as it has done on other days).

episode 2: replaced the Myrra mains transformer, which demonstrably, the multimeter said, was intermittently cutting out,
after cropping legs off close on other side of pcb, had to lever it out applying heat alternately to the four legs, desolder pump wasn't helpful,
then found that heating and physically blowing through the pcb holes was the only way to clear them, for positioning the new one; what tools, should I have ?

I'm sure professional solderers don't have double expresso's just before work.

I thought below were interesting maraX observations, I'd pay to know similar info,
so you could try what he says, and see if it tastes different

Overall I've found some really useful things from the data. A few of these echo what was in Dave's review, but I still find it extremely useful to see everything in real-time.
1. The optimal time to pull a shot is approx. 32-35 minutes after the machine is switched on. On PID Setting 1 (~94 degrees), the machine first hits the target temperature after 12-13 minutes (led still flashing), then it overshoots to ~100 degrees, before finally settling to the correct temperature around the 32-35 minute mark (it fluctuates).
2. Once you pull a shot, you have approximately 4 minutes to pull your next shot before it overshoots to ~99 degrees. Otherwise you have to wait anywhere from 15-20 minutes before it stabilises.
3. Once you pull a shot, the steam target temperature shoots from 116 degrees to 136 degrees for 30 seconds, then 124 degrees for 1 minute. This seems to be the 'steam boost' mode. The actual steam temperature hits 124 degrees a little over 1 minute after you pull a shot, and this seems to be about 1.5 bar and a pretty good time to steam in my experience.

yes, i've seen that - tried installing the visualisation package hes using on my Pi but it ground things to a halt :D
The brew temperature does seem very low when the ready light first goes on, but apparently the temperature displayed via the serial port isn't directly representative to the output temperature (according to some other research i can't find right now)

I grabbed an MC2 for use in work where I only need to change the grind to dial it in when I get a new bag of beans. If you were changing all the time it would be an absolute nightmare! For the price it's great and I can't really complain. It's obviously nowhere near as solid or as fast as my Mignon at home but it was a lot cheaper. The only slightly issue is retention, but I tip it forward when I'm done and most comes out anyway.

What makes it so hard?
