Sir Alex Ferguson Brands Newcastle A 'Wee Club'

Fergie is just distracting the media attention away from the poor performance (again), he's a smart man.

MOTD 2 point this out with the "RVP COULD HAVE DIED ZOMG" speech. Everyone is starting to cotton onto Fergies game this season (earlier than usual) which is fun to watch.

'Cotton on'? I think the outrage that these statements have caused shows they haven't 'cottoned on' at all. They're giving the exact response that Fergie was aiming for.

I find it funny that people seem to get so wound up (in the media) over Fergie's comments after all the times he has done it. It's like they all have some sort of memory damage over the summer.

Well, no. He's distracting attention away from his spack out after half time. Unless you're also saying that was choreographed as part of a grand scheme, lolol.

Well, yes. He's also distracting attention away from that, but his primary reason for coming out with these statements is to distract away from below par performances and shift the focus on to something other than his players.

Time and time again Fergie uses this type of reaction.

Doesn't matter if they're not playing well, they are still winning. If you can win while you're not at your best then you must still be doing something right. Everyone else should be ******** themselves at the prospect of facing United playing 'good'.

He seems to have lost the plot over the last 2 weeks with the "attempted murder" rant, harrassing the ref and then this, then again he almost always gets away with whatever he likes, 2 other managers have been asked by the FA today to explain behaviour that doesn't get close but we all know the score, it's a real shame that someone who is one of the best managers ever has to behave in such a way

Perhaps because Fergie wasn't talking about FA officials  And the last time he did that he got rightly charged iirc (Mancini's comments very similar to the ones Fergie made about...Dowd?)

Newcastle are a small club in comparison, I hardly see what the gripe is. He's stating a facht.

Doesn't mean you aren't a good club. Alan Pardew isn't expected to win Champions Leagues or even titles. When that's your clubs Modus Operandi, and you have a fan base even half of the size of Manchester United, come back and we'll have a discussion.

We all know that wasn't the intent behind his alcohol fueled rant. He's not saying (in a reasonable tone) "Newcastle are a smaller club than United, they have a different set of goals etc etc" he is seeking a response and once again trying to deflect away from his own and his teams inadquacies. (spl?) He's basically being the arrogant **** as always, and playing the victim as usual too.

I must admit I found that bit bizarre.

It's Fergie land, a truely bizzare (and alcohol fueled) place.

Well it depends how you clarify big. Does that mean Arsenal and Spurs and Everton and Liverpool are "small" clubs. Do you have to win something every year to be a "big" club?

Did you really compare Newcastle to Arsenal, Spurs, Everton and Liverpool? LOL. :o

All these clubs have huge histories and fanbases compared to Newcastle. They have all won something (of worth) more recently than Newcastle and they are all from multi-team cities.

NUFC is the biggest club in Newcastle, maybe even Tyne and Wear, but hell Middlesbrough won the league cup not so long back and they even got to the UEFA cup final in 2006!

Today Newcastle should be mentioned in the same breath as Sunderland, Villa, Fulham and Southampton, going by the league table.

What's wrong with just being "a club"? Why does everyone have to be a big club or a small club? The whole debate will continue forever because different people have different views on it, some value historical success, some value fanbase, some value recent success, some value spending power etc. The question of historical vs recent success is of particular importance when you look at clubs like Leeds and Forest, both would have been labelled big clubs in the past, but nowadays you will find mixed opinions.

If I was pressed because I tend to favour recent history there are 6 big clubs in England, but I wouldn't describe Newcastle as a small club: MU, MC, Chelsea, Arsenal, Spurs and Liverpool.

On the one hand Fergie giveth

The only person they have not spoken to is Barack Obama because he is busy. It is unfortunate but I am the manager of the most famous club in the world. Not Newcastle, a wee club in the north-east.

on the other he taketh away..

Ferguson also launched a passionate defence of Ryan Giggs, who has encountered criticism for his performances this season. "How can people criticise a player like that?" the manager asked. "He has given us 20 years and has done so well. It is a problem for him because he wants to play more but at his age I cannot afford to risk that. He was amazing on Wednesday and it is simply beyond belief that anyone can criticise that."

I have to laugh at this chumps continual use of the phrase " Alcohol fuelled rant" like its some kind of insult.

He's a Geordie, defending Newcastle united, a collection of fans and a city that are in a almost permanent alcoholic fug.

Small time bitter.

What's wrong with just being "a club"?

There isn't anything wrong with that, regardless of what people class your club as as long as they are "your" club and you stick by them through thick and thin tha's what matters. Everyone will make sure (or want to make sure) that they are classed as big, it tends to be Newcastle/Pool/Everton and Spurs fans who are the most touchy on the issue too as they are not winning things.

I find the whole thing amusing rather than annoying as he is going off the rails and it is interesting to watch. I don't (personally) know a Newcastle fan who is really bothered by it as he's a joke and what he is saying is just deflection. I'm sure there are some out there brandishing pitchforks over the whole thing and screaming bloody murder, I'm sure they'll find them for SS News as well :)

I'm finding (some) of the ManU fans responses the best, they are getting very precious sticking up for the alco, not even releasing that we (or at least me) or just poking fun at him as he is poking fun at Newcastle. See my other thread and the responses :p Like the post above being a lovely example, atpbx running round threads calling everyone small time and bitter etc, deep breath there mate :p
