Sky Fibre Optic

Does the engineer absolutely need access to the master socket for a fibre installation?
I ask because our master socket is behind loads of boxing, so it's a major job to get to it.
The socket in the front room is actually an extension from the master socket, with a master socket faceplate on it, would that be usable?

Yes they do - your speed will suffer if they don't isolate all the extension wiring.

Do Sky normally have access to newly enabled areas from the beginning or do BT have exclusivity for a while?

My area is due to be upgraded in September but I'd rather stick with Sky than switch to BT Infinity.

BT in my area had exclusivity for about 6 months, I waited to get SKY as they don't traffic shape and throttle your connection like BT do.

So hold off and you won't have to sign up with the darkside:D

It's nothing to do with BT having exclusivity. Because of the way they provide FTTC, Sky (and TalkTalk) have to order a GEA Cablelink from Openreach at each Fibre enabled exchange to be able to deliver FTTC services from it and in some exchanges they take longer to do this than at others. As soon as they have this link in place you will be able to order.

Ahh, well hopefully being Bristol City Centre they'll see it as worthwhile.

They have done all the areas around the city centre but have left us until September, not fair! :o

I got sky fibre as soon as my cabinet went live which was about 2 months after fibre was enabled at the exchange. So in my instance there was no exclusivity.

Sky Hub arrived yesterday, hooked up to wireshark for 30 secs and obtained the username and password ready for my merlin flash of my Asus RT-N66U, hope the Openreach engineer comes early doors on Friday.

The hub itself is quite a nice looking piece of kit, shame it will get put back in the box once the engineer does one!

Got the 40meg installed yesterday whilst I was at work, how long does it take for the speeds to settle? Tried a few files last night and have had a couple of dropouts for a few seconds and fluctuates between 20 and 30 on speedtest.net

The first 3 days for fibre are the most important, do not switch of your BT modem or Sky hub or reset hub. If you have to reset the Sky hub do it only once in a 24 hour time period as twice the DLM will lower your speed and you may not get it back.

So, got my line moved over today ... Initial speed estimates from all ISPs was about 23Mbps, which is acceptable for the distance I am from the cabinet. Now I am always skeptical about speed estimates as prior to FTTC they always said I would only ever get 750k to 1Mb and actually as my line is fairly new, it always achieved 1.5Mbps.

Anyway, decided to get Fibre Unlimited (40/10) rather than Pro (80/20) as I didnt expect to get above 40.

Moving on, ripped the Sky Hub out as soon as he left, slapped Merlin FW on my Asus RT-N66U, popped in my Sky ID stuff, waited 30 mins and rebooted, and we were on!

Speedtest.net and thinkbroadband speed tests are hitting and topping out at 37Mbs, which is fantastic, a lot more than expected, even in the first few days. But what got me wondering was, what speed could I achieve if I wasnt on the 40/10 package (which is limited to 37Mbps i believe) ... I wonder hmmm?

Anyway, all up and running ... i'm hoping the speed doesnt drop too much over the next few days

Extra question for bonus points, between the combo of the Openreach modem and my RT-N66U (with Merlin FW), is there any way to obtain line stats?

Are there any Netgear routers out there I can use to replace the SR101. I want to keep the supplied Open Reach Modem, just want to replace the diabolical wireless plus I could do with Gigabit LAN Ports.

If I can't replace the SR101 directly, I will add another router for Wireless.

Thanks in advance :)
