Sky Fibre Optic

Struggling to get it working

1. Set the WAN (either WAN1 or WAN2 depending on which WAN is being
used) to PPPoE (Im using WAN2)
2. Enter the Sky username and password in the PPPoE screen 3. Save the settings reboot the router.(Assuming they mean in WAN2 Section here)
4. Change the WAN mode to "MPoA" (WAN1) or "Static or Dynamic IP"
(WAN2). (I just change WAN2 as this is the one I'm using)
Even though PPPoE has been disabled the username
settings are still saved. (Assuming they mean WAN1 here as WAN2 is enabled as instructed above)
5. The Router will now send "username|password" as option 61 in any DHCP request.
The string is converted automatically into hex.

6. You may have to use the MAC address of the Sky router instead of the
default MAC address. (Added this to WAN2 section)

If anyone gets it working or I have made an error in my understanding please shout :D

Thanks

So this was a typical day in the life of my virgin media connection:

and now under Sky Fibre Unlimited:

Honestly the difference is night and day. Couldn't be happier for anybody thinking of switching.

I have just managed to make my Sky ADSL work with my old non-sky router, so I don't need to use the 'SR101' they supplied. So far it's working very nicely, and I can trust you how I managed it if necessary. :)

Before I go ahead and consider Sky Fibre, can anyone confirm 100% that you can use it with the Asus RT-N66U without having to use a custom/hacked firmware?

This post worries me = http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showpost.php?p=23848123&postcount=1892

You do need to use custom firmware from Merlin. It's not hard to set up though. Here's a link to the process of getting and applying your password after installing merlin: http://forums.digitalspy.co.uk/showthread.php?t=1688078

I'm still on Sky broadband and am wanting to move to Sky Fibre but some posts in this thread worry me as not everyone has received a good upgrade/connection

Also what 3rd party routers are best to use with Sky? After reading this thread these routers stand out Billion BiPAC 7800N, ASUS RT-N66U (with merlin firmware) or draytek vigor 2830n.

My only requirements are WoL and Gigabit LAN. Any of those 3 will be ok or one in particular?

Sky don't throttle anything on LLU ADSL or Fibre.

As for the Sky router hate - just plug a gig switch into the supplied router. It works just fine.

Any idea why Sky are only quoting 40.9mb estimated speed for my phoneline, when BT and Plusnet quote 69.2mb?

Because Sky Fibre Unlimited (£20/month) is provisioned at up to 40/10, so they don't quote anything higher. Sky Fibre Unlimited Pro (£30/month) is the other package which is provisioned at up to 80/20 and you can upgrade to this by phone after installation.

If you go for Sky Fibre Unlimited Pro you will get exactly the same result as BT and Plusnet.

Agreed, I expect they will drop the 40/10 package eventually and put everybody on 80/20 at a reduced price. I have Fibre Pro and it's really good - I'm glad I didn't go with BT now they are trialling carrier grade NAT!

Sky usually has decent Quidco/TCB cashback too, right now TCB is offering £131.30 for a new customer Sky Fibre sign-up.

I know that there are people with issues but it's the exception rather than the norm.

Just done a speedtest a few minutes ago and full speed as usual:

My TBB graph is fine too - any spikes are just usage:
