Sky Fibre Optic

I use my own N66U router instead of the Sky Hub/Router connected to the Openreach modem, you simply need to obtain your user/pass and add this as a startup script to the N66U (very simple) so that it passes the MER over.

However, I believe most new customers get the new Hub which has the modem/router built in to one device so that might scupper your plans if you're a new customer.

If you get the new SR102 you will have to buy an openreach modem from somewhere (e.g. well known auction sites). Its still possible :)

I thought the n66u had vddl modem built in? I know the fritz 7630 does.

I'm sure you can put the sr102 in modem only mode anyway.

The DSL-N66U has an inbuilt vdsl modem, the RT-N66U doesn't. I know the Openreach modem + RT-N66U works :) Not sure about the DSL version, although I'm sure google could help!

As far as I am aware, the SR102 will not work in modem only mode.

Did everyone on Sky Fibre Pro get the email about new features?

Static IP and line profile customisation :D

I've just had a live chat with Sky CS and you'll be able to set target snr to 3,6,9 or 12 from your settings page. They couldn't give an ETA but said it would be soon.

No. Because it's unlimited you can't see your usage online.

I wish I could get stats for two reasons:
1) interested
2) also can spot usage patterns etc. hacked wifi, compromised machine

I use netflix, sky on demand, sky go and general internet. Rec I prob do 50gb per month maybe more.

I wouldn't be surprised if this is ADSL2+ only to please the Be* customers.

I have the RT N66U, will take a look cheers.

I've just spoken to them again. The chap seemed clued up and confirmed that it will be available on Fibre. The email makes that pretty clear too :)

To be honest offering SNR targets will probably end up causing more trouble than good, for the odd superuser it'll be great, but for the average joe who doesn't have a clue but still wants a play, not so much.

But I guess if you know the limitations of your line it doesn't really matter if other people are going to mess themselves over so, good for you :D

I don't see how it's possible - the Openreach GEA-FTTC product that Sky buy only offers a choice of Standard, Stable or Fast modes which just changes the number of errors the DSLAM will tolerate before DLM steps in to stabilise the line. They don't offer any form of SNR adjustment directly. Most ISP's already order Standard or Fast anyway.

I think this is why Bethere put a limit on how many times you can change profiles in a certain period of time. I see your point; for some users, it may cause frustration. I would, however, happily make use of it :D

I don't understand the technology, Olly. I'm just going by what's in the email and confirmed in Sky's live chat.

I'm just imagining everyone whacking it in at 3db and wondering why they're disconnecting like crazy, on the other hand I've been in the situation prior to moving to VM where I'm literally one building away from the Exchange and the DLM would point blank refuse to set me anything lower than 6db, I ended up having an engineer out for it because I said I was going to leave :D

To be blunt neither do most of the first line support people ;)

Case in point, I rung up Virgin to request my upgrade to 152mb after the service tech dropped off my Superhub 2, and the CS lady mentioned "There will be a £49.99 charge due to us having to send an engineer out and set it all up"

To which I replied.

No.

No you don't, I have the infrastructure and router capable of supporting it.

Flip the switch and upgrade me, I'm not paying £49.99 for an engineer to come here, do absolutely nothing, then ring you and tell you to flip the switch.

Needless to say after 5 minutes of waiting and her talking to her line manager she was "happy" that she could offer me the free upgrade(That costs 7.50 extra a month mind..) So yeah, you can't expect all customer service staff to be clued up, but I'd really hope they understand the basics, for the love of god I'm giving these people my card details.. :p

Forgot to ask, can you elaborate on this, got a link? :)

What in particular is it you wish to know? Running DD-WRT on the N66 - the startup command for the N66U is:

killall udhcpc
/usr/sbin/udhcpc -i vlan2 -V "5.27.1a4N/PCBAFAST2504Nv1.0" -c "**username**@skydsl|**password**" -p /var/run/udhcpc.pid -s /tmp/udhcpc &

Obviously change **username** & **password** to your own once you've captured it. Capturing it via wireshark is probably the easiest, guide is here

Job's a good an!

Merlin is a good FW to use on the N66U however I found it quite temperamental and was quite unstable, been rock solid on DD-WRT but each to their own. You get a username/password box to make it easy on Merlin, DD-WRT requires a tad more input.

Can you post a copy of the email?

Indeed. I don't buy it.
