Sky Fibre Optic

Retention always manage to get a good deal, and they're local to me so they must be extra kind. :D

Fibre is enabled on the 23rd. Can't wait.

I wish I could get 80mb :( I'd happily pay extra for it, but I barely get 35mb now.

Any idea if the speeds will be improved to the future or can that now only be done with FTTH?

Hey all,

I'm sure there was a thread giving advice on getting a good deal through cancelling sky. I phoned up today to cancel but the woman has only put a cancellation on the TV part saying Virgin would get in touch to sort phone/bb. Didn't offer another deal or anything. Can't help but feel she just didn't want to put through a full cancellation.

If you're moving to Virgin cable/Fibre then they will contact Sky to port your telephone number (assuming you're keeping the same number) BUT it's unlikely they will move the Broadband too. The networks are entirely separate. The only exception to this is 'Virgin National', their DSL service.

Short update from me, fibre installed last wednesday which was great. Felt a little sluggish so did a speedtest at the weekend which gave approx 5MB down, 1.5MB up... This was after estimated speed of 37.5mb - any ideas where to start addressing this? I guess phone sky?

Hi all,

Further to the above i've looked in the router which has;
Line Rate - Upstream (Kbps):8655
Line Rate - Downstream (Kbps):27972

Still not the 37.5mb I was quoted but would be a heck of an improvement over what I've got now which actually feels slower than pre-fibre! Anyone know what would cause differing speeds at computers vs at the hub? Assuming of course that the line rate is what the hub is getting?

Was plugged into a long phone ext from the master socket but moved directly to master socket with no improvement :(

Cheers,
Alex

Anyone think that the supplied router is not great at all? I have the 40mb connection but performing poorly, in terms of possibly just not a strong signal however only being upstairs, any suggestions?

Yeah, their supplied routers aren't the best. The SR102 I now have can take about 2-3 minutes to stop dropping the connection, but it's solid after that. My Time Capsule takes care of the wireless network, with the SR102 sorting DHCP stuff out. Very effective. :)

The issue has been raised (and raised(and raised again)) about the poor Wireless the new Hub gives. It's probably the most common non service affecting call we get. We've pushed so hard to get the next Router with 5GHz and at least 1 Gigabit Ethernet port. I haven't heard anything but we're asking and pushing for it. It would also be nice to get an aerial port that you can screw an aerial into to improve the wireless

Do you deal with retentions ?

I'm thinking of leaving a moving to Virgin cos i'm paying over £60 a month for Fibre,
TV with entertainment pack for kids channels
Another Box In my bedroom
and the phone line.

Seems really expensive and my call charges are always over £20 cos my girlfreind rings her mum everyday.

Feel like i can get things cheaper tbh.

The basic cost is about the same as Virgin, the £20 call costs can be sorted by adding the £5 a month anytime calls package!

What routers have you guys replaced the Skyhub with?

I want to replace my SR102 but don't want the faff of ebay for a vdsl modem and then a separate one or is that the only way?

I'd guess what's required to replace the VDSL modem is the same requirements as for ADSL, with your modem being capable of handling MER and PPPoA.

As I've said above, I use a Time Capsule for my wireless. If I was to use that as the router, it wouldn't get on well with the Xbox. :p

edit: Fibre is enabled tomorrow. :D:D

Got Fibre last Friday, here are the connection status,

Modem

Modem Status*Connected
Traffic Type:PTM
Line Rate - Upstream (Kbps):10000
Line Rate - Downstream (Kbps):39994

Major issue is that I get no more than 17 Mb, my old TalkTalk router with the full 80 Mb Fibre I saw the full speed using Ethernet and 60+ Mb with WiFi, what gives with Sky??? Massively disappointed, even have tried the Sky Hub via Ethernet to the TalkTalk router plugged into the Fibre Ethernet port and still get 17Mb I know this does not have a WiFi issue as it worked perfect from day one with TalkTalk.

Not very happy, getting nowhere near the speeds quoted :( :(

Was enabled first thing this morning.

Line Rate - Upstream (Kbps):20000
Line Rate - Downstream (Kbps):79987

Steam now goes at a constant 8.8MB/s rather than 150-160kB/s!

I was going to leave sky ADSL for virgin so called up and got through to retentions.

18month contract 40/10
half price line rental for 12 months £7.50mth
£7.50 fibre for 6months then £10 a month for remaining 12months.

so basically works out at £15 a month for 6 months, £17.50 a month for 6months and then £25 a month for 6 months.

I didnt think the deal was to bad! However reason for posting is, god the wireless technology is old and crap in these sky hubs
