Sky Fibre Optic

Anyone notice that Sky Shield was acting up today? Was blocking sites left right and center! Wanted to visit Dotemu (Blocked) , Amiga Retro (Blocked)

Checked Sky Shield and it was set to Phishing and maleware sites which I had turned off originally. So I set it to block crime and self harm instead

Broadband Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 29786 kbps 9995 kbps
Line Attenuation 26.1 dB 0.0 dB
Noise Margin 6.6 dB 6.6 dB

This seem ok? Not sure what dB figures you want ideally.

Cheers

Here's some info on noise. My connection has an uptime of 280 hours, should be far longer but it disconnected due to it being physically turned off. :)

I know it's not Sky's fault but my exchange has changed AGAIN to Sept 2014 to be live.

Cabinets have been installed for about 12 months now all over my town and local road ends etc. Started with Mar 2013, then July 2013, then Nov 2013, March 2014, July 2014 and now September 2014. What a total joke.

BT exchange claims they are AO (accepting orders) but BT, Sky etc etc all say they have not accepted any orders for this exchange and Sept 2014 is the next date they have. Pathetic

just connected with sky - moved house and, unfortunately not in a virgin media area :(

Its an FTTC connection but the house is a bit of a distance away, the estimate given was 10-13 down (and I'd been used to 72 down). Was pleasantly surprised to get 19 down from the minute I turned the router on. Not too shabby really.

The wireless range is also pretty good on the sky router, we get connection all over the house and its a 3 story property.

so far so good.....

Hi all this is probably going to sound like a stupid question.. But is Sky fibre really unlimited?
The reason I ask is I've just signed up for the PC world 500gb cloud backup service.
I have about 327gb of digital photos and video that I've accumulated over the years ready to be uploaded.

Having been with bt before I'm used to having quite strict caps.. And just want to clarify from some users here that using that kind of bandwidth on top of my kids hammering YouTube and us watching an hour or two of Netflix a night is not going to end in an unhappy sky sending out letters!

Totally unlimited.

.

I was quoted 15mb down and initially got around 20. Now get a steady 28 down. I'm 1k from the cab so very pleased with speed and reliability.

I have today acquired a Draytek 2820n, I know its an older model but is there a firmware that support MER so I can use it with Sky? (I currently have the SR101 + ECI Modem)

It doesn't unfortunately, the later drayteks can but the 2820 can't do the right DHCP options to authenticate with MER. That beta firmware doesn't work either and then they said it wasn't possible to add support for it on the 2820 :(

As said, totally unlimited! My usage varies a lot, but some months, like this month, I hammer it with no issues ever :)

Finally back online, with "Fibre Optic", but the speeds seem exactly the same as when I used regular broadband. max downloads on steam is 440kb/s. using the black sky hub that sky bought over, engineer fixed a fault in the line this morning. Is it my dongle causing the issue?

On the control/settings for it comes up as 11mb.

Speedtest result. Not too happy.. http://www.speedtest.net/my-result/3674363695

Come January if I decide to stick with Sky I'm planning on dropping back to a standard ADSL connection as don't see the benefits with FTTC connections...

I watch Netflix and Sky ondemand, but from a hopeful house move the Sky TV is on the hit list at present.

Im guessing it's my Wireless USB Dongle. At one point the current data rate was 100mb, now it's dropped.

Super mega facepalm. I had the wireless settings set at 802.11b. not b/n/g. 2.0MB/s download on Steam! sweet jesus.

26MB/s at the router. Stepdad is around 3MB/s download but he is wired. I only have wireless due to being upstairs.

Apparently they may tweak/optimize the speed in the first 10 days, so fingers crossed.

Unfortunately, you'll generally find it decreases after 1-3 days as it figures out the best config ... I get a stable 26Mb/sec and i'm 980m from the cab, If I get a profile reset, it usually sits at 28-29 for a few days then back down to 26

I got a 2820n working on Sky fibre the other month?

Anyone got a Cisco 887VA working on Sky, will hopefully be moving home and having thoughts around IT kit and so forth.

TBH, I'm also mulling dumping Sky FTTC and their TV for bog standard ADSL as I don't game etc. Watching Netflix is about my limit these days along with virtualisation
