Sky Fibre Optic

My connection has been solid, it's dropped out a couple of times but only in the early hours of the morning so it's never bothered me.

How many connection dropouts have you had, in how many days?
Its just that I cant afford to have a connection dropping too regularly - I am after reliability, more than speed. My current connection resyncs on average, about once every 15 days.
 
The engineer puts a new faceplate (regular phone socket as normal, and dedicated vDSL at the top of the plate) on the master socket. Mine said he would install an extension kit if I needed it (I did) but thanks to the extension already in place he just made the extension the master socket with a little fiddling and took him barely any extra time and no drilling.

I was using my broadband right up until the engineer phoned me from the cabinet saying hed be half an hour.

Interesting, so am I right in thinking that the new faceplate would allow the current copper broadband (o2) to run until I am satisfied with Sky?

In the past I've had nothing but trouble with Sky Broadband, so if possible I want to take advantage of their 30 day test policy and if I like it, then I'll cancel o2.

Would this work?

I don't believe this is possible.
Remember, SKY will transfer your phone line to themselves (this is part of the deal). You are likely to be allocated a new phone number.

No it won't work. VDSL is still a form of DSL and uses the same frequencies (and more) that ADSL uses so you can't have both on the same pair of copper wires. The VDSL filter faceplate does the same thing as an ADSL filter anyway - in fact, I've seen some of the earlier BT VDSL installs done using the old style ADSL filtered faceplates (with ADSL printed on them) so I don't believe there's any difference in filters for ADSL and VDSL.

Can anyone recommend a decent spec cable router for this install, as I'm going to use the Sky one just as a basic "dumb" modem etc. I think.

I've also heard BT have been mucking Sky customers around with no shows and sorry can't install it etc. (Typical ******** Telecom)

I've had mine pretty long now (one of the early adopters outside of sky employees), it's been rock stable and great speeds. DLM adjusted speed for a while but loving the connection. 4-5mbit to a stable 40Mbit is awesome and a great increase for the small cost increase.
 
So I tried to use the website for the Fibre, and it gets to a certain point, asks for my address, then says it can't process that online and that I should call this number.

I call this number, girl says oh we can't process that via phone as none of us are trained for fibre stuff yet, use the website.

I rang up Sky to place an order for fibre optic via a staff account and was told sorry you can't do it. She told me to register via the intranet at Sky and I would get a call back at some point. I knew this was a lie so spoke to someone else via the Sky online chat service, they gave me a different number which I rang and placed the order. You get some absolute idiots working there.

My installation is due today between 1-5pm. No sign of them yet, but I'm optimistic! A cousin of mine who lives just 5 minutes away is also expecting a BT engineer today between the same hours, hes having his infinity upgraded to infinity 2. It will probably be the same guy so we'll see...

Why would they do that? BT Openreach are a totally seperate company to BT Retail who offer Infinity. They don't care what ISP an end user goes with so why would they fob any user off deliberately?

Why does he need a BT engineer out to upgrade from 38Mbit Infinity to 76Mbit? It's done BT's side with no need for an engineer to visit your property unless there's problems.

Many SKY customers have been getting fobbed off on the day of their installation and are told that the BT engineer cannot attend - with little or no notice. Plenty of SKY customers are p'd off with BT for this reason.

If BT Openreach are completely separate to BT Retail, why do they both start with the same letters - BT. My suspicion is that both companies are owned by BT and if so, there is no doubt that 1 subsidiary (Openreach) can be told to give priority to its sister company (BT Retail). I mean, this makes complete logical sense. Right or wrong?
 
Has anyone any idea when Rayleigh, SS6 will be getting fibre? I'm fairly sure my exchange has been upgraded (Downhall) but nobody seems to know when the cabinets are likely to be done...
 
Well I finally got Infinity 2 yesterday, I still needed an engineer to visit & check the faceplate, even though it was new last year when I originally had Infinity installed.

All he did was remove the faceplate & check the reverse, wouldn't say why. I've since looked myself, & to me it's just a faceplate, nothing special.
While he was here he also ran a few test for errors, line condition, etc while here, then same tests at cabinet.
At he cabinet I'm getting 71/10 there, by the time it's traveled the 700mtrs to my study it's it down to 50/8.:(

No it doesn't make any sense at all. Openreach are a seperate division so they'll still get paid their chunk no matter what ISP requests them to do the work. Since they're getting paid regardless, why would they care which ISP the money is coming from?

BT were forced to be broken up and if they were to give BT Retail any form of priority they would be in trouble as it defeats the purpose of them being broken up in the first place.
