Sky Fibre Optic

My 10 day installation period is over and this is todays:

Im going to conclude that on fibre, the 10 day period can be disregarded as the speeds/pings dont change.

I have checked this through speedtest.net and usenet downloads - they are identical to day 1.

:)

Im sumwhat confused phoned Sky to discuss offers for existing customers for Sky Fibre Broadband, they advised me that Sky Fibre isn't available in my area, however when i use their checker it said's it is.... Someones telling pockies..

And FTTC check confirms the same

This link says nothing about Fibre in your area...

https://www.btwholesale.com/pages/s...nity/Coverage/ADSL_Availibility_Checker.html#

the link you posted says the 'exchange' is accepting orders but says your cab is part of deployment 4a whenever that may be.

what does the BT infinity site says?

Remember Sky have to get the updates from BTO so if they have not been updated about your cab going live they will say its no available.

Phase 4a was a while back so it looks like your cabinet wasn't enabled for whatever reason. You'll probably continue to see the holding date indefinitely.

There are literally loads of these where they haven't been enabled by BT Openreach. Mine is also one of them but that is changing in November. :)

I found this to be the case with connection, too.
Personally, I think that SKY tells customers who are suffering from slow speeds, to wait 10 days. This is a method to shut those unhappy customers up, hoping that in 10 days any faults clear up OR the customer forgets to chase up the fault.

If you do upgrade, please let us know what sort of bandwidth increase you "actually" got. My gut tells me that most of us will get 40Mbps when going on the £20 package, but when spending the extra £10, most of us will not hit anywhere near 80Mbps.

My max attainable is about 76Mbs according to what the modem tells me, BTs checker says i should get 56Mbps and 18Mbps upload. I would be happy if i got close to 70Mbps in all honesty. Just need to decide. Apparently there is a 1 month cooling off period too so i can always change back

How are you able to check the max attainable?

Interesting figures you've quoted which are quite similar to mine. The BT installer said that he reckons I'll get around 75-77Mbps on Fibre Pro given that I'm not too far from the cabinet. BT's checker estimates around 53Mbps and he was saying that that checker is usually way off in his experience. I'm not going to take that as gospel though and it's good to know there's a 1 month cooling off period.

Had problems with microsoft's telnet client but putty worked:

From telnet:

Max: Upstream rate = 26129 Kbps, Downstream rate = 76344 Kbps

Don't really know how those figures would equate into actual speeds on Fibre Pro though.

I think the question you have to ask yourself is that is it worth paying an additional 50%, for the extra bandwidth - how often are you going to go above 40Mbps?

If you have multiple heavy users, then it may be worth it. But most people will rarely go above 40Mbps, for more than a few seconds.

20Mbps upload would be handy, though.

I just signed up. a few days in already.

I'm getting 30Mbps down and 8.xx Mbps up and 20ms ping

Similar to this guy below. Anyone got any ideas to improve, esp. the ping value?

Just had ours installed this morning, so here's the obligatory speedtest mugshot:

That's through Ethernet though, the WiFi is slightly slower (~22Mb/s). The engineer said we're getting the full 40Mb on the line, so maybe some tweaking can up the speed a bit more...
