Sky Fibre Optic

yeah, i think the £30 price tag, if confirmed will be a mistake

not sure many would pay the premium over BT infinity unless you want a trully unlimited and unshaped service - some may and be willing

i am hoping for an improvement on the 40/2 service at £20 tbh

all unconfirmed at this time so things may change

Done some digging. Looks like DHCP option 61 needs to be set to the ppp username and password to get MER to work.

can someone post a guide with screenies please.

i currently have sky unlimited with draytek v120 pppoa to pppoe passthrough. im reluctant to upgrade if its going to mess up my pfsene setup.

is the bt openreach modem lockdown ? if not what settings need to be changed in order for pfsense pppoe to connect

thanks

Maybe read the last few posts?

I have the same setup as you currently.

You will need to connect the VDSL2 modem to pfSense and configure a PPPoE connection.

I'm not sure if the Sky username & password will change or how easy it is to extract the details from the Sky FTTC router. The best place to ask is at http://www.skyuser.co.uk/forum/

The VDSL2 modem is locked down but you might be able to unlock it if you're given a Huawei modem.

It's DHCP option 61 that needs to be sent to get an IP, otherwise it's the same as previous PPPoE connections using the vigor 120.

how would you do that on pfsense ?

I've opened a thread on the pfsense board under Installation & Configuration (top forum).

Search Sky on there.

It's the dhclientp.conf file IIRC that needs to be modified, however I can't comment until I've got the fibre installed.

OK I figured it out in respective of MER.

You first need to setup your modem to vc-mux bridged. I currently have a draytek vigor v120.

Draytek Vigor 120 ADSL2+ modem. Settings for that are: MpoA page: MpoA Enabled, Encapsulation: 1483 Bridged IP VC-Mux, VPI 0, VCI 40.

You then need to plug in your sky sagem modem/router and retrieve your LAN MAC, IP ADDRESS AND IP GATEWAY. YOUR SUBNET IS 255.255.255.0/24

with this information you can now apply that to any router or hardware firewall.

This method also works with fiber I am told, but you don't need to configure the open reach modem. All that changes is that your plug the openreach modem into the sky router and retrieve details as normal.

The method is simple and does not require username/password **** as pppoa does. Ive read that sky are phasing out the pppoa for MER.

Only questions regarding this method for me are the following:

Will the ip dchp lease will expire ?
potential of being stuck with a static ip, which depending on peoples scenario can be bad or good.

Whilst that works for standard LLU connections, it wont give you an IP address via DHCP on fibre connections.

This is what the option 61 dhcp option is for, its an authentication method that uses the PPP username and password we used previously for PPPoA LLU connections to get an IP.

ok i understand, but it should still work with static ip via this method for fibre ?

I take it your having it installed very soon. I would be very much interested in your setup once you get it working.

well at the moment im stick to MER for LLU as apposed to PPPOA for sky unlimited untill i move to fibre when there is a workable solution. As pppoe has issues on pfsense and you can get intermittent disconnections from time to time.

I cannot afford to go back to stone age with a flimsy plastic router. It just not up to scratch for what I do.

It will work fine if you continually set a static IP, but to find that IP you would have to plug in the router they provide, connect, find your IP/subnet and then reconfigure your Pfsense box each time.

I assume it won't renew the lease either, so that means you could be doing this every 3 days or so.

Its confirmed. Seen updates on pricing today.

Had my FTTC installed today. They wouldn't move the master socket but it's all up and running. Any questions feel free to let me know. Torrents @ 4MB/second is quite impressive! Definitely prefer sky to risking going with BT despite their "faster" speeds.

After the annoyance of Sky Fibre not being available on the launch day, forgot about it and left it a week and just checked and now it's available. Installation on the 8th May and predicted speed of 40mb.

What message were you receiving when you couldn't order it? No availability at all or just regular LLU?

I'm not sure if anyone has asked, but when the Bt openreach engineer comes round to install the faceplate and openreach modem for Sky fibre, he'll install it downstairs in my living room where the master socket is. But we have all our PC's upstairs connected to our BE modem using 4 ethernet cables. So is it possible to use long ethernet cables to the PC's upstairs for fibre, or can we have the BT openreach modem upstairs away from the mastersocket. Sorry for the noobish question, I'm not clued up on fibre enabled modems.
