SKY HD

i have a basic pack, but i really want to test HD, if i dont get it then i will have to wait for HD DVD which i think will take a looooooong time.

If youve got the basic package you will also have to pay the £10 Sky+ subscription, if you have 2 premium packages you dont pay the £10 Sky+ subs.
Skysports 1+2 = 2 premium packages as does the Sky movies pack so your probably better of having either Sky soprts or Sky movies rather than paying the extra £10 subs.
No matter what package you have you still have to pay the extra £10 SkyHD subs.

BTW it looks like the Pre registration has now ended, on the Sky site it now says you can order by phone or online some time in April.

If you have allready got a sky digital installation all they have to do is connect a new hd set top box top the existing dish feed and connect it to your HD ready TV :D

I thought it needed two cable runs from the dish, like Sky+ as there are two tuners?

The STB price is hefty.

Telewest will have the trail BBC HD channel which will trail for a year, starting off with the first World Cup game. Out of the Sky HD channels I expect them to easily get Artsworld HD, National Geographic HD and Discovery HD. Who knows if we'll have to pay extra for the Sky Sports/Movies/One channels but we'll get them sooner or later.

I'm sticking with Telewest, I'm already enjoying my HD (Telewest do actually have content, although only through Teleport which consists of about 10-15 eps which are free and SinCity which you have to pay £3.95 for :( ) You will be able to actually record HD content on the TW box too, although only abut 20hours but supports a external HDD.

remember sky part own those chanels so they will not be on tw for a long time. you can record hd on the sky hd box and far more as mpeg4 takes up less space. the hdd is actually 300gb but 160 for personal recording.

The tw box and service is miles behind sky, without bbc it would be worthless. A friend of mine in the north has - he is impressed with the recording side and says the HD is very good. Problem is there is nothing to watch in HD, he called TW and they can not confirm anything new or new chanels. He also says its not as quick as his ild sky+ box esp chanel guides and flicking thru stations. Overall he likes so it is a good start.

The main problem is still content, TW dont make any so they have to rely on free HD - so BBC only or buy in HD. Sky will not sell yet so its going to struggle against Sky who make content and own plenty more chanels producing content. Problem 2 is mpeg2 - PQ is not the problem as it can look pretty much as good as mpeg4. The problem is bandwidth - to get the same quality as mpeg4 mpeg2 needs upto 10 times more bandwidth. Herein lies a decision - do you have less chanels at high quality or more chanels but at vastly reduced quality. Commercial reasons will force TW to keep up with SKY and try and have as many chanels as they can - so expect the quality to suffer.

And will people get over the £299 price, its a bargain. As far as im concerned you are paying £10/15 per month to TW for the box as your not paying for content. The £10 sky fee is for content and with football, movies etc its not bad value for an early adopter.

Its a shame TW seem to have jumped in with a reactionary product as it really is no competition to sky - im all for competition as it would drive down prices and thats only good.

Im trying to work out how much my Sky pack would cost on TW. i go to the quote section but i can not add spots + movies - only one or the other.

With 1 of them its £49.50 with a phone line. My Sky HD pack will be £52.50 without a phone line. Can you not have sports + movies on TW ? If so how much is the full TV pack with HD ??

Yes, you willl require two feeds from the LNB to the back of the Sky+/Sky HD box as it has 2 tuners.

From my prospective if you have brought a HD TV then what are you all complaining about. If you want the service sky says you have to pay for it. I myself preordered yesterday and at 2.50 per week thats responsible. Its the box price that annoyed me but a new sky+ box costs £150 anyway.

Me I can't wait to see sky one in HD.

Although it's worth noting that the sky engineers do fit a dual bonded cable that only needs to split apart at the back of the box. In case anyone was thinking they needed two physical cables floating around.

Waits to see Ebay flooded with Sky+ boxes

Another thing that annoys me about Sky, you have to buy the Sky+ box but if you dont pay their subscription you cant actually use the recording features, this would make sense if you didnt buy the box.

Also, I cant see how TW HD isnt competition for SkyHD, It's cheaper (even more so if you have the phone line/net), It's already released and does have HD content.

Sky can go two ways, 1) Keep the HD stuff for themselfs, try to get customers over to Sky or 2) Let TW use their HD feeds and make money either way, since they're already happy for cable customers to have SD Sky One/Movies/Sports etc I personally think it will go this way

It's called Shotgun cable and I have never known a Sky installer to use it (Not saying they don't I have just never seen it used)

A tidy installer would use double cable clips anyway (they can accomodate 2 cables in the one clip).

But most Sky installers rush the job so don't expect wonders.

If you want a top job done then get it installed by an independant.

Its not just £2.50 a week though is it? Its £2.50 just for the HD subscription. Then its an extra £10.62 per week for the channel package (assuming you are taking the HD movies & sport). Then theres the box price on top.

I have a HD TV, I have many HD programmes that I stream from my Xbox 360. I'm complaining because to watch a small selection of HD content, I will have to pay £53.50 per month + a one off £299 charge for the box.

IMO thats a large price to pay for a small amount of HD programming. Whilst there will be some quality programming included in the price, most of Sky programming in my experience of having it in the past, is complete rubbish!

IMO.

Ive got that double cable on my Sky+, infact the original cable from when we were on normal Sky is still on the front of the house and it was only recently i noticed that the cable didnt actualy go any where anymore as its cut bdfore entering the house and its cut at the LNB, its been like that for years and ive only just noticed :)

As for the SkyHD content on Telewest, it took a long long time for Telewest to get the Sky content its got now so dont hold your breath waiting for Sky to let telewest have Sky in HD as its not going to happen over night.

Just a single run to my box which will mean lots of drilling and mess. Wonder whether I should move my LCD out of the room when the time comes... I don't want it getting a dusting of plaster.

My parents had sky+ installed yesterday and the bloke installing it left a Sky HD installation & training manual. Don't know if there is anything new in it but gives an idea of what it is going to be like.

Slightly different tack here...... I can get to the sky.com/hd site but none of the links from there work for me, any ideas?
