*** Sky Q Thread ***

Can't see Sky ever adding UHD to the 1TB box in all honesty. With the price difference at install being so small compared to the upgrade price after install along with the extra space, two remotes and UHD capability I can't see any logical reason why anyone would consider the 1TB unless its purely financial.

Is the lack of 4K on the basic Sky Q box a hardware or software limitation? I'm not planning to buy a 4K telly for another year at least, so spending £200 now on the other box would be a bit of a waste. It would be nice if Sky eventually added 4K to the basic box (even if there was a subscription premium).

Sky are coming out with a broadband streaming 4k box in 2018, so with that, you will be able to get the same 4k movies the Q box does via broadband - links posted earlier & google it.
Your 4K telly will doubtless have 4k netflix/amazon too.
I would think they will deliver a slightly lower bandwidth 4K sport too, via broadband.
... so not forking out the £200 may not be a problem, the new box will not justify a £200 install to just connect it to an internet connection.
( my relations, somewhat naively payed the £200 when they do not have a 4K telly either. )

Nothing about Sky Q is saying must have for me right now unlike 2008 for HD. Granted I don't have a 4K tv either but I'd rather wait for the right TV before rushing.

Sky Q really needs 4TB at least, as it is a downgrade for me.

Just had Q 2tb and a mini box installed this morning, the chap who did it was a total gent and cleared a load of old redundant cabling off my house too.

Largely impressed with it however I've noticed that the 4k upscaler isn't a patch on the LG e6 one, which isn't surprising.

Given the lack of 4k content currently I've opted to keep it on 1080 for now and switch when needed but an 'auto' resolution option would be nice.

I've got Q with a minibox for the bedroom.. it's a 3 floor town house and the router is currently on the bottom floor, the main Q box on the middle floor is working fine but the minibox on the top floor can't seem to work for more than half a day before it wants the router resetting..

I'm considering moving the router to the middle floor but surely with it all creating a mesh that shouldn't be a problem? I mean I get strong wifi on the top floor?

Any thoughts?

I've always wondered considering the cost of Sky why the scaling chips are poor. I sometimes see transparent graphic edges on the sport graphics (top and bottom) bounce on fast panning. Yet it doesn't happen with my other devices.

What's the benefit to forcing it to 1080p on a 4k TV? Also on the upscaling, does the Sky box doing it override your TV?

would that be 1080interlaced (not p) :D ? to match the live satellite transmission for the HD channels, although, maybe catch up material via broadband is p (please Bob) ?

(being pedantic) some of the artifacts maybe down to de-interlace

Way I read all the reports about the streaming service is that it will ONLY be available to people who cannot have a dish due to limitations with regard to planning etc in very built up areas.

From what I have heard all other customers will still get a dish.

I have also heard that there could be limitations on the services available though streaming compared to dish services. I.E possibly no 4k service through streaming.

Although it is all rumor so far as nothing has been agreed finally on what will be provided.

Thank you MisChief we got the Sky Q installed on Friday. Got it all connected via Ethernet and seems fine. The biggest thing that is of use to us is continuining where you left off on recordings and recordings being viewable across all boxes

Sky is built for the masses not enthusiasts. You have people using £300 55" tv's thinking they are amazing, etc using Sky. They are built as cheap as possible to keep their profits high. How else would they be able to afford £500 trillion for football rights every couple of years.

the masses do not know what a good tv is. try and explain black levels to them and they are like "but it's thin it must be good".

Another thing to remember is if you are watching a live broadcast (i.e.not a recording from your box) and you wish to continue watching in a different room, if you press record then pause, you can shut down that TV and box go to another TV and mini and continue where you left off as if it was a recording.

It is bad when you think of Peter Kay.

by pressing record you are recording it are you not? so it's not as if it were a recording because it is now being recorded.

True, but it then appears under your 'My Q' section and if you want to spend twenty minutes brushing your teeth and avoiding the wife putting on her face pack then you can still continue from where you left off.

Got Q installed this morning, quick question.

- If you have something stored on both Q boxes, can you delete from one and not the other or will it always remove from both when you delete?
- For those with kids, how do you get around this 4 device thing, I'm disappointed you can't have more than 2 devices with the Q app on, I have 4 iPads in the house! Even worse I thought Q App and Go would be separate entities but they tie in with each other, I take it you can't increase from 4?

Enjoying the upgrade anyway, just need my 4K TV now!

Thanks!

Everything is stored on the main box, the mini's just stream the recordings.

The 4 device thing is really annoying, I agree.

No increase on 2 devices but you can then use 2 Mini boxes as well.
Deleting a program removes it from all boxes. There is only one hard drive, in the main Q box.
