*** Sky Q Thread ***

Connecting the boxes via Ethernet would certainly stop any potential connectivity issues if the option is available.

i tried using ethernet on the boxes and they had constant issues. wi-fi just works so long as they are close together and have strong signals. as the boxes have to connect directly as well as to the network.

Im interested to know what kind of issues you have bud.

Im using Gigabit homeplugs to connect my 2 Sky mini boxes to the main Sky Q box via ethernet.

All works flawlessly.

the mini box would just stop working constantly. i restarted it several times and had to set it up several times from scratch and on wi-fi it works fine.

I have 2 mini boxes and the main Q box caballed up and must admit I've not suffered any real issues.
When the installer came out, I gave him all of my Wi-Fi details for my home wireless, but he still initially ended up setting up the 2 Mini's to communicate with the box via the built-in wireless.
However once he'd done that and activated everything he needed to, he disabled the Sky Q wireless and everything is now wired - as far as I can tell.

I finished a long overdue job of getting Ethernet upstairs at the weekend for PC and TV. Also took the opportunity to hook up the mini box via Ethernet and get rid of the Sky Booster. We were having occasional issues as upstairs is the 3rd floor. What I will say is the setup of the mini via Ethernet is not exactly user friendly or well documented. It took me a couple of attempts and a quick Google. Once it had connected, I disabled WiFi on both boxes via the Engineers Menu, and everything has been fine since.

Also, My on-going struggles with losing Satellite signal on certain channels at certain times since moving to Sky Q, are hopefully nearing an end.
Despite having new boxes, LNB and dish. The problem kept randomly re-appearing. I keep losing ITV2HD, More4HD amongst others. At the last count, over 15 channels were either blocky/pixelated or had a no signal message. The lost channels were always the same ones.
After another engineer visit on Saturday, we eventually came to the conclusion that the cable must be damaged or have water in. Possibly caused by some building work we had done in the middle of last year. This would possibly Explain the intermittent nature of the fault due to weather/temp fluctuations.
Sky have offered to do a full re-install, including a different cable route, and have been fantastic throughout the whole saga. They get a lot of stick at times, and yes it can be expensive blah, blah, but I can`t praise them highly enough during my issues.

I'm looking at upgrading to sky q with the current £13pm £20 install cost for a 1TB and 1 mini deal. I am, however, struggling to work out what I actually get for this. The website is worse than useless, and I've yet to talk to anyone in a call centre who understands their portfolio properly.

I believe this deal will do what I want, I'm the only one watching so its the time/place shifting features that interest me more than simultaneous viewing

To help get my head around this can anybody answer the below questions about what I can/cant do with is deal?

Record 2 channels whilst watching a third

Start watching a live program on main box, continue on mini box then finish watching on app

Start watching a recorded program on main box, continue on mini box then finish watching on app

Start watching a live BT sport program on main box, continue on mini box then finish watching on app

Start watching a recorded BT sport program on main box, continue on mini box then finish watching on app

Connect main and mini boxes using wired Ethernet not home plugs or WiFi

Have app installed on several android devices but only use one at a time

Download programs from sky specific channels (F1, Atlantic etc) to watch on mobile device whilst away

Download programs from non sky channels (BBC, BT Sport etc) to watch on mobile device whilst away

Other than UHD and more storage are there any other benefits of the 2TB box

Does the 1TB controller use Bluetooth or ir to communicate with box

Does the mini controller use Bluetooth or ir to communicate with box

How many minis can be connected at a time to the main box

What happens to my sky go account, can I still stream live sports on the go though sky q instead

Thanks

Record 2 channels whilst watching a third Correct

Start watching a live program on main box, continue on mini box then finish watching on app Not live, but all you have to do is hit record and then watch from the planner.

Start watching a recorded program on main box, continue on mini box then finish watching on app Also correct

Start watching a live BT sport program on main box, continue on mini box then finish watching on app BT Sport costs extra, paid to BT for on a Mini. The App is the BT Sport one so has no link to Sky Q.

Start watching a recorded BT sport program on main box, continue on mini box then finish watching on app Also correct.

Connect main and mini boxes using wired Ethernet not home plugs or WiFi Correct

Have app installed on several android devices but only use one at a time Correct

Download programs from sky specific channels (F1, Atlantic etc) to watch on mobile device whilst away Requires Sky Go Extra but it's free for all customers via VIP anyway and comes free with Multiscreen/Sky Q Experience

Download programs from non sky channels (BBC, BT Sport etc) to watch on mobile device whilst away Correct, although not 100% sure on the BT Sport stuff

Other than UHD and more storage are there any other benefits of the 2TB box You can watch on two mini's and two Sky Q Apps with the 2TB. 1TB limits it to 1. Think 1TB, 1 Mini, 1 App, 2TB=2

Does the 1TB controller use Bluetooth or ir to communicate with box Bluetooth remotes are standard now.

Does the mini controller use Bluetooth or ir to communicate with box Also standard on mini boxes now.

How many minis can be connected at a time to the main box 1TB will allow up to four Mini boxes but watch on one at any one time.

What happens to my sky go account, can I still stream live sports on the go though sky q instead Correct, Sky Q App is basically Sky Go but with extra functionality in the home.

Thanks

Thanks for the quick reply. The 1TB box seems the best option for me as I wouldn't take advantage of the 2TB features. To clarify on BT sport: If i want to watch live use main box or BT sport app. If I want to watch recorded watch though Q boxes and Q app.

On the download programs questions I really meant to say download/sync programs recorded on the main box from those channels so don't know if that affects the answers.

Downloads or live TV recordings are stored on the drive so the box as good as doesn't differentiate between the two.

With the F1 season about to kick off, I'm still thinking about getting UHD added. Anyone care to comment on whether it's worth it or not for sports?

it's totally pointless IMO and I have it.

there is so little content and the difference is barely worth it. the jump in quality from HD is noticeable but only a pedant would bother with it. it's more effective on netflix and amazon because the 1080p streams are so low bit rate so the 4k streams look amazing in comparison because the bit rate is a lot higher.

if it's only for F1 then I would say pointless unless you have £15 a month to burn.

still annoys my folks that the downloads do not include the subtitle streams, versus live recordings ... and would me to, since often listen to music + read subtitles
other than that distinction, I have not seen a defintive comment that BBC downloads (for example) are, as high a bitrate and same quality as original broadcast, BBC programmes from iplayer definitely aren't, and I thought all the catch up was from the original channels 'servers'

edit : for iplayer some folks think the hd downloads via app, maybe better quality than original broadcast https://helpforum.sky.com/t5/Sky-Q/BBC-One-HD-Picture-quality/td-p/2946276/page/11

Its a small but noticeable improvement in quality.

Thanks, maybe I'll give it a miss for now then as it's only for sport.

Not sure what's going on with my box at the moment. TV just goes black like it's been powered off. If you turn box off and on (just remote not hard reset), then it comes back. I've swapped the HDMI cables and I know it's not that as Apple TV works fine. Same on TV ports etc.

Contacted Sky to see what's going on, who tried to say was an LG firmware issue, but that is up to date, so waiting to hear back on next step now.

Anyone else suffered the above at all?

Right guys so following up on my install questions, my girlfriend spoke to my landlords (unfortunately I was out) to ease their concerns.

Apparently they once had Sky in the same flat, but the install was a nightmare and the guy just chucked the cable across the roof and left it all loose and dangling and looked just plain unsightly/dangerous. They also have a local friend who had an install where the engineer drilled 3 holes in the wall before getting it right and essentially refused to fix any of it. Sky didn't want to know because apparently they subcontract out the engineer/installs?

This might be total nonsense but again I'd love to know a little bit more about what rights I have when the engineer turns up and says he's going to do X where X doesn't seem neat and tidy. I'm expecting our dish to face the back of the house and our TV/lounge is at the front. Will he drop a wire down the external wall and leave it dangling? Will he pin it to the wall nice and tidily as you'd expect? Can I ask him where to make the cable come into my lounge etc?

Thanks!

As long as you don't talk to the engineer like he's something you've just stepped, in he will run the cables pretty much anywhere you want within reason.

I've had several installs over the years & never had issues. Cables have always been tidy & pinned securely, last engineer even took his shoes off when he came into the house to finish off without me saying a word.

earlier property I had the landlord said no ... and preceeding property, apartment had the right aspect, so I had a DIY dish, on patio, in the right direction ....
that was pre-Q, but with Q do you have to have a ($$$ too) install ?

Thanks. I guess it's a bit luck of the draw who you get. My landlord has basically said if they **** it up and it costs to fix anything, I'm liable :( #loverenting
