*** Sky Q Thread ***

Does it not need a quad lnb/coax for Q Experience/multiscreen then? The dual coax in there at the moment is fine, but if I need another dual cable I might have to pre drill the hole as the engineer didn't have a bit long enough last time :p
Mini boxes have no dish connection at all, they communicate wirelessly with the main box.

Can anyone explain how it works when an engineer comes round to install?
When my Sky dish was fitted around 4/5 years ago the engineer suggested a position for the dish and asked me if I was happy with that.

You're better off working out where the disk would have to go to get the signal, ask the landlord where in that area he/she wants the dish and then present that option to the engineer and see if he/she is happy with that.

Hmn this is going to be a faff. My landlords currently live in Asia so the time difference is not helpful for e.g. calling them once the engineer is round.

Do Sky offer any service where the engineer comes for a quick 'survey' and can tell you the options for the dish? Then I can feed that back to the landlords and then arrange another visit?

You can work it out for your self. The dish needs to point 28.2' East of South. Use this: https://www.dishpointer.com/

And set using 28.2E Astra 2E 2F 2G

Thanks. Trouble is I've not got much idea of what is on the roof (i.e. chimney) so if they'd mount it there or if it'd need to be on a wall on the back of the house. Roof would be preferably. But our lounge is at the front of the house so the cabling needs to get to that somehow; what's the norm for cabling?

They will put the dish wherever it works best/where you want it and then externally run the coax until the point of entry into the room in the house you want the equipment to go.

If I currently have Q 2TB and Experience, plus the Box Set bundle, which includes 55 HD channels. I already have netflix.

So if I "upgrade" to ultimate on demand I get a £2 saving on my netflix by moving it to sky, but I lose the HD channels so have to spend £5 to get them back by adding the HD addon.

Is that right?

Ok so I'm all confirmed with my Sky engineer coming on the 18th and the BT engineer coming on the same day. No options for the guy "reccying" the property first so I'm going to have to tell the landlords I'll call them when he's here for approval of where the dish is going. Love how this country doesn't care about half of the population that rent :o

Aaaanyway. I'm now thoroughly confused. I'm with Virgin Media currently. Pay £48pcm for 50Mbps fibre, the worst TV package and obligatory wasted landline. Now, full disclosure; I'm getting Sky Q and absolutely everything for free from work. All bundles, sports, cinema etc, everything. Absolutely amazing. Buuuut - I was under the impression I needed to change my broadband over to Sky as well for Sky Q, but 10mins after I placed my order, my colleagues told me that's not the case  Admittedly I hadn't stopped to think about it I was just happy to get rid of VM and get all of the Sky stuff :o

So, before we got Virgin we had Plusnet fibre here. It was brilliant. We don't get much of a discount on Sky line rental/broadband with our deal, so if Plusnet can beat that can I go with them? I'm already seeing a Plusnet deal for £24.99pcm including line rental that beats our Sky offer. VM don't seem able to beat that, and the service/reliability has been quite poor anyway so I'm happy to move away from them.

tldr; Can I get Plusnet fibre/phone with my Sky Q? Anything that won't work the same? Thanks.

there was an earlier thread where despite sending access photos (lower roof impedng access to chimney) , they turned up and then had to get a different 'high access' team,
I forget the terminology, but the criteria for an install being possible were unclear .. maybe some of the sky installewrs will tell us.

Thanks. So would it be a faff to get Sky installed whilst I still have Virgin, then change to Plusnet after the event? Presumably the Q box just plugs into ethernet (and the sat obviously) somewhere right?

Sorry for the dumb questions. Sky has never been on my radar due to Murdoch, but now that he doesn't it means I get a tasty discount and I'm morally ok with using their services :p

EDIT: Second question. Is it imperative to have an active internet when the Sky engineer comes? Or is it a case of he just wants to plug-in the Q box for you? I might try to get my internet switched over on the same day seen as I'll be working from home..

But I mean if is happens I've not got any internet when he turns up is that going to be an issue? Or can I just connect the Q box after the event?

Yes it will be an issue as the engineer will not be able to check you have all services running ok without an active internet.

the main live feeds come down via the dish, but all the on demand services come via internet.

Current instructions are to install the main box only and rebook to install any Mini boxes. The Mini boxes require internet to activate.

Please may someone tell me what inputs and outputs they're using for their Sky Q setup if not using an AV receiver? IE, HDMI, Ethernet etc. My mum will be ordering it and is currently remodeling her house and we want to make sure everything is channeled into the walls before the paint and paper go up.

Cheers!

Connecting the boxes via Ethernet would certainly stop any potential connectivity issues if the option is available.
