Sky Updated Epg

Its security.

Its easier to spoof an ip address than a physical phoneline.

That makes no sense, your IP address wouldn't be part of it anyway considering most ISPs use dynamic IPs. I imagine it'd be tied to your viewing card number and PIN, or they'll just get you to use your online Sky ID.

They need to know your box is where you say it is though.

... and the IP address won't prove that. It proves the box has an internet connection and the ISP it's connected to. That's all.

I think that's what he means. I agree with it too, a few times I've wanted to to browse the store on there and see what movies are for rent but because it just complains that I don't have a phoneline connected, I haven't bothered. The box has a connection to the internet, it should be able to use that.

The OnDemand does use the Broadband. When I'm using it my router flickers the lights on each ethernet port when it's downloading. You quoted the part I explained on what it does. It tells Sky what their customers order, viewing statistics and interactive shopping, Q-Cut and all that.
Plus for each box to phone home to let Sky know where it is.

Only the Showcase section is cached to the hard drive. Until they have been replaced by each thumbnail. Thats how you can save it to the hard drive so quickly.

Nothing else is done through the phone line for updating, downloading or anything of that sort. Forced updates and the pushed out stream that you wait on is all done via the dish.

Sky will buy the rights to show the film free either permanently or on a limited basis depending on the deal they strike at the time. The studios will get a cut on the ppv stuff.

Bugger! I should have kept some of the stuff when I did. Like Multiplicity. Thats now on PPV.

Indeed. Because some people are so honest. Giving the box to their neighbour/friend.

How is it nonsense? Have you got multi room? They nag you to death if both boxes are not connected to the phone line.

Yes, it's part of the contract. You break it and the price goes up to full. Not the £10 for the box thats not connected that you've broken the T&Cs.

You can see on your phone bill when the boxes dials home to let Sky know where it is. It's not charged but it is listed. I personally don't have issues with it. Everything is done so quickly it has no effect on the phone line itself.

No I don't have multi-room, but I wasn't talking about multi-room in the first place. My lonely Sky+HD box isn't connected to a phoneline.

Yeah I know, I didn't say otherwise. What I did say was it's annoying that you need to phoneline connected in order to rent movies from the Sky Store; if you don't, you get a message where you're told you need to phone a number for assistance.

Well that's not what my installer told me a couple of months ago, my box has never been connected and i've had no issues.

Are you a new customer? every new box has to be connected for a year. It's in the agreements. After that it isn't mandatory but it is if you have multiroom. Since I'm on that. One time I tested it to see what would happen before I had the house rewired. The boxes used to trip up the broadband. Within a week or two I had notices sent out from Sky demanding the boxes be connected. Or face full charges.

I don't think they care for single-box homes, the installer didn't bother with the phoneline for mine, although there was no phone socket in the same room anyway.

Bringing this back on to the thread topic "Sky Updated EPG" has anyone who has had the update found any glitches or issues?

Obviously I am still waiting for the update here :)

Is it still just the one revision to the originally released update, or has there been another?

I've not had any issues on the DRX890 and 895. I normally get 3 months without a restart.

I'm positive the DRX890 had another small update after it had the Sky logo moved to the left of the screen. As the box one night while watching TV restarted and came up with the Sky intro. But the DRX895 jumped to the latest.
