Smartwatch Thread (news/apps/updates)

Gone for a left field choice in the Huawei Band 3 Pro. £60 for GPS, heart rate etc.

Really like it but, it's made me adamant I want a fully feautered watch next time. I'm not liking Huawei's integration with Strava and MFP which I can't seem to get around to work like my Fitbit flex 1 did.

Ha! It now works with mfp the way I wanted it to through Google fit. Have to keep an eye out and make sure it doesn't give me loads of free calories for little work.

Does anyone with a Galaxy Watch know how to tell if the watch is using the phone's GPS data? I started a walk on the watch which was connected to my Pixel 3. Samsung's website states that in this scenario (when the watch is connected to the phone), the watch will use the device's GPS.

However, there was no GPS icon at any point within the phone's notification area? Surely this means the phone's GPS wasn't being used as any app requesting GPS triggers that icon to show?

That Galaxy Watch plugins all have access to location. Would this be because it's a non-Samsung phone?

Hi

I seen EE offering the Galaxy Watch and it comes with a mobile phone number, my phone is blocked so cannot be used as a phone, is there a way to use the Watch alone as a phone?

Whats the number for if i cannot call/text?

Any time i try to call, just tried to call using my phone...which has no sim and is blocked.

thanks

I think you need a EE account, then you can add the watch to it. The Galaxy watch is a Esim.

Got a Tickwatch Pro arriving tomorrow :)

Had a load of vouchers for Christmas so thought I'd dip back into a smart watch.

Originally had a Moto 360 (1st Gen) that I picked up in a sale sometime after its initial release but have since stopped using it.

Performance and battery life wasn't that great and the Android Wear software was stuck on an old version; something that the Tickwatch will hopefully address.

Got the ticwatch pro and been wearing it for a couple of weeks now, but been so busy with work and other things that I really haven't done much with it in terms of getting it set up. What apps are people using? Its a cool piece of kit but I really need to sit down with it and properly explore what it can do.

I've had a TW Pro for a while now, upgrade from a G Watch R.

Personally I use Pujie Black and just the step counter.

So no new watches with the new chipset this year :(

Fossil Sport has it...but it looks absolutely awful I think, just seems very cheap looking.

I'm just back on Android and was looking for something fairly slimline with NFC and the best option seemed to be the Skagen Falster 2. Picked it up at the weekend and I'm quite impressed with it even although its on the 2100 chipset. Definitely doesn't feel too bulky or big on the wrist considering I'm coming from a 38mm Apple Watch. Battery life is alright as it easily gets through a day even with some Fitness Activity thrown in and of course it has Google Pay which is very convenient.

Definitely impressed with it so far.

I use Marine Commander watchface and Staylit Wear (I find the screen timeout way too short, so this app allows you to keep it on for longer. Should be part of the settings to be honest).

I use the watch mainly for viewing notifications, so I don't have to wake my phone.

I think it is safe to say AndroidWear or whatever clueless google are calling it these days is dead and buried. Fossil are a fashion brand so with the recent acquisition deal between the two I can't see anything really changing. Nothing will change the fact that AndroidWear etc NEEDS a decent SoC and Qualcomm's dated 28nm Cortex A7's are ancient tech. Just like tablets, Google have long since lost the plot and will allow Apple to easily corner the market. Smartwatches for 2019 is a one sided affair.

Whilst I can't speak for these TicWatches, Samsung are the only real Apple competitor building SoC's and a better OS for their watches and it is a shame Google haven't hopped onboard with them. I'd suspect at this stage Samsung know they're better off going it alone anyway.

Have you any numbers to confirm Wear OS is dead?
Please. Of course not, you don't need numbers. WearOS is practically a non entity anywhere, Google don't even talk about it nor do tech sites. It is about as alive as android tablets at this point. Any observant techhead by now knows what the future of android watches looks like.

Thanks.

I went to have a look at the sport. And my god it looks crap :(

Samsung needs way more app in there store before I would go back.
But I agree it's the best watch at the mow.

Yep, and a better message handling API to deal with incoming notifications as my old S3 wasn't too good with handling more than one whatsapp/text message.

I'm probably with you there. They make a great watch, but I'm not a fan of their OS or more accurately, lack of apps. I specifically wanted a watch with Wear OS on it.

Best Wear OS watch at the mo is the Ticwatch Pro IMO. I've had everything from the Ticwatch E and up and for me the TWPro is the best of the bunch. HW2 is nice but feels too small.
