Smartwatch Thread (news/apps/updates)

Anyone tried the asus Zen? Seems to be a curry's/pc world exclusive for now but all sold out.

Had mine delivered today as a late christmas present from the mrs. Long story short, i had an S5 until 2 weeks ago and replaced it for a nexus 6, my girlfriend had bought me a Samsung Gear 2 Neo, which is Tizen and only works on galaxy devices i had to return it to amazon and decided on one of these instead.

So my first impression it seems to be a nice device, was swaying towards a LG Watch R until i read a few reviews and this seemed to be either winning or a close runner up. This being less bulky, battery life and being able to change straps easily swayed it for me. Installed 5.0 update pretty much instantly after initial startup / setup with phone. Its my first fooray into wear devices and it does come in useful, was out with friends last night and it vibrates, you glance at your watch and it says who its from, i noticed it was just some generic email which meant i could ignore it till later and so on. I know fitness data isnt going to be 100% accurate but its nice to glance and see what steps your doing etc.

Considering it's early stages of wear tech i'm looking forward to seeing where it goes for future updated devices :)

Unless I've missed something massive, what does this tech do beyond relay some phone data to your wrist, in order that you needn't be burdened with actually having to look at the phone you spent £500 on? :p

When you're in a packed train it's hard to get your phone out of your pockets. Also, since I mostly use mine for music control, I don't need to get my phone out if I want to change tracks.

Fair enough, I don't tend to find myself in trains so busy I can't use my pockets and I tend to just dump music on shuffle and leave it alone these days :p

They look cool and I find myself wanting one but struggling to actually justify why or think of anything it will do other than reduce my bank balance and make my phone half useless :p

Can they do anything like nfc payment? That would really be a useful tool and might expand the popularity of said payment types

- The ability to see messages/emails etc on your wrist when your in a meeting without attracting attention.
- The ability to reply to messages or action them
- Get nav directions on your wrist
- Set alarms, reminders, notes from the wrist
- Ability to control phone volume, mute/vibrate/sound from the wrist
- Ability to see whose calling and take action
- Ability to get all notifications on the wrist without looking at the phone
- Ability to control music from the wrist
- Smart unlock
- etc etc

And oh ye, customisable watch faces and the ability to show the time.

Virtually all of those functions sound like it's a £200 way of making your £500 device pointless 90% of the time :p

I think it's something I'll have to refrain from getting until it does something that really adds to the smartphone, rather than simply moving half the interaction to a different screen. I could see myself reverting to simply looking at my phone anyway after a few weeks of novelty wore off.

I think the opposite. After a few weeks you get so used to glancing at your watch to check for notifications, if you forget it one day, you really miss it.

It is purely about reducing time and effort to do things. I use voice commands a lot more now. When you take your phone out, you may as well prod at the screen to accomplish what you want.. With the watch, raise it to your face and say 'ok Google, remind me when I get home to....' is so simple.

Some people spend £2,000 to £20,000 on a watch that only tells the time, I guess it all depends on perspective and if its something you personally value.

I need a new watch anyway, some of them look pretty decent, so why not.

Prob a slight waste of money, but then so is a nice car, powerful PC, top end graphics card(you get the point by now I'm sure)

Thanks for feedback cookie, just need to find one now!

^ This, if i am crashed on the couch and my phone is out the kitchen or on the desk, i dont have to move to see who is txting me and replying, same if i am upstairs and my phone is downstairs, little things like that, height of laziness i guess, or as i see it convenience.

What attracted me to the Android Watches (LG G R in my case) is being able to change the watch face whenever i want to, when i want to, depends on what takes my fancy on that day, i seem to be sticking with the Pujie Black face at the moment due to how you can customize it, but being able to change the face and how you can customize it is unlike any traditional watch (i have many traditional watches).

What one person may see as struggling to justify and not needed, someone else sees the opposite, it would be a boring world if we all thought the same :)

Its less interaction with the phone...which has a side benefit of improving the battery life as your glancing and using your phone less.

Think of android wear as an enhancement rather than a need.

Battery use on my LG R is very variable, some days it's consistent & other days it makes it up as it goes along ....

Ultimately, it wont just be interacting with your phone. Eventually it'll be interacting with things like your central heating, your lights, your fridge, your oven, TV etc. It wont do anything that your phone wouldn't be able to do, but you'll be wearing the technology which should make accessing all of the connected devices a bit easier (in theory).

I keep my phone in a leather pouch. If I'm out walking the dog and it's raining the phones also probably in a zipped pocket in a waterproof jacket. If it's cold I'll probably be wearing gloves too. If my phone goes off, thats a lot of effort required to access it while keeping my dog under control on a lead without dropping it (he pulls, badly). For me, a smartwatch makes a lot of sense in this scenario in particular. It's not essential and I'd survive without it, but its a logical step in the way technology is going, especially with regards to home automation like I mentioned earlier.

edit: or even for starting your hyundai

Has anyone got issues with Whatsapp notifications on the 360?.

The watch vibrates but the screen doesnt light up when i receive a message, if i press the screen then im able to read the message no problem. Its just that it doesnt automatically light up the watch, no problems with texts/emails etc just whatsapp

Ive tried resetting the phone and reinstalling whatsapp but to no avail.

Forgot to take my LG GWR charger away for 3 days with me. Turned it off overnight and into cinema mode 2 or 3 times, ran out of battery driving home with 20 miles to go. Not bad.
