Smokers

That they show the faintest sign of regard for the environment and other people, and a little self control?
I roll my own, so just dried leaves and a bit of paper, no filter that takes 50+ years to biodegrade.
I've banned smoking in my house because of the kids - I and friends go outside (or just inside the door when it's raining.)
I show regard for other people's wishes re smoke, although the people who act holier-than-thou, or come out with petty sarcasm, don't get as much consideration.

Is this the sort of thing you had in mind?

good point but smoking has become publicly accepted where smelling of b.o or faeces is less acceptable according to our society.

1) exactly what I done
2) Why should I have to?
2) I'm 16

If you dont like something someone is doing move away if they walking on a street not a lot else you can do , i am a non smoker but if they ever tried to stop people having a fag walking down the road i would seriously worry about the state of this once GREAT nation of ours

I did move away as stated in the post. If they did ban smoking in public of course there would be outcry. As stated in another post I don't mind smokers, if they wont to smoke they can. But it's when they smoke and it affects non-smokers that I get annoyed. Most smokers I come across aren't very considerate of non-smokers! Smoking in cafes and down the street isn't very considerate imo, they should wait and smoke somewhere out of the way.

I'm a smoker, and I hate inconsiderate smokers as much as anyone. I realise that my habit is hazardous to peoples health, thus I try to avoid having others breathe my smoke as much as I can bar quitting, but there are some situations where the non-smokers need to appreciate that smokers are not out there to damage there health, they are not the axis of all evil and pretty much need to just stfu, in a pub for example. Some **** in a pub was hovering around me deliberately coughing and spluttering whilst I was smoking. I asked if he had a chest infection and suggested he should go to the doc's, and that the last place he wants to be in is the pub - where it is well known to be full of smoke. He 'hmpfed' and stropped off, whilst I wished him a happy evening with a big hi-de-hi grin. :)

also makes me laugh that all the 'vocal' non-smokers are complaining that smokers are very selfish, and that they are inconsiderate of others health etc. yet at the same time, they are only worried about their own health. Irony++;

You don't read the news then.. July 2007 sees the introduction of a public smoking ban.

Thats a little better, but unfortunately still not good enough. For example, what makes you feel like you are justified in littering because you are a smoker, whereas I might take pride in my town and want it to be respected and kept clean, but have to put up with people like you who still throw their butts on the floor with disdain? Im not having a dig, but is important for smokers to realise that there is an inherent amount of disrespect that comes with being a smoker, so to ask for respect in turn is completely hypocritical.

Im a vocal non smoker, and I havent mentioned health once, nor is it any bearing of my argument against smoking in public.

Er, I dont know, a fellow citizen of this country? If you want something from me, then surely you should provide me with something in turn? Try reading the rest of the post before raising your emotional defenses.

I did read it. I'll retort: You're attitude sucks, it's not good enough.

Very thought provoking. Smokers take note: this is why no one respects you, because your addiction blinds you into not being able to have a reasonable conversation about your habit. You demand yet cannot understand what is "fair". Not that it matters, neither one of us make policy - but Im glad that policy is heading in my direction. :)

Dont worry, it might actually motivate you to quit, then you'll regain most of that lost dignity!

I haven't seen you mention health either, but the rest of the statement still apllies. You are accusing the smokers of being selfish and insulting just because they smoke, yet you are only concerned about your own well being. Not the slightest bit of concern for the smokers well being. Does that make you just as selfish?

Another indesputably ironic post.. this time it is your hatrid for smoke blinding you.

Actually, my concern is one the well being of society and equality. I dont ask of people what I wouldnt be willing to give in return. All I want is balance. I dont force other people to smell bad through my actions, so how is it justified that they do it to me? I dont drop litter directly onto the street 20-40 times a day, so why should they be able to get away with it? It is a simple matter of respect, something that smokers do not show in their actions.

Not really, Im just demonstrating that governmental policy has nothing to do with whos right and whos wrong. Just, in this case, governmental policy is siding with my opinion, even if it is for different reasons.

Only time I'm vocal about smoking is after having to suffer it on public transport. Rest of the time I couldn't care less if they do, I just find it funny when they freeze in cold rain to have a smoke.

To me smoking is just another health risk like unhealthy eating or excessive alcohol, it's up to the individual as to whether or not they follow the medical advice. If someone doesn't like the smoke/smell just walk away.

Firstly, I personally don't feel that there's any justification for littering of any kind. Admittedly, I don't always put the remains of the rolly in a bin but on the plus side I hardly ever smoke while walking around (messes up the walking/breathing rhythm), so there's usually somewhere to dispose of it when I do have a smoke.

I'm not sure I understand your comment that it "is important for smokers to realise that there is an inherent amount of disrespect that comes with being a smoker". It sounds more like a strong opinion from someone who is royally hacked off about something to do with smokers/smoking than a rational analysis - would you elaborate?

As is plain to see, that is not the part my post refers to.

Fair play. As I said before I too hate inconsiderate smokers. People who light up at a restaurant whilst others within 'smoke' range are still eating for example. (I prefer to either just wait, or step outside all together - away from the door I add.)
