SNES was my first proper console. Really loved it and had so many games for it. Its in the attic, might dust it off sometime when my kids get a little older and show them how games used to be.

Going off global history anyone would expect the SNES to however Europe and South America were the two regions where the MD beat the SNES. Imo MD all the way, people can say the SNES had better hardware but that's only because the MD was designed to fight the NES, the SNES wasn't launched until 2 years after the MD. The fact that the MD beat the SNES in two regions while being totally outgunned is a testament to the quality/gameplay of its games (and the fact the console/games were cheaper).

I had both and loved them both. By far imo best generation of games/consoles ! :p
 
I had both back in the day

Classics on both consoles but as mentioned previously the buttons on the pad on the SNES always trumped that of the MD.

Also loved some of the SNES accessories too (super scope, Mario paint with mouse etc)
 
If you had asked me this question when I was a kid I would have said the Megadrive. However now I'm older, I seem to prefer games that came out on the SNES.
 
oohhh good thread / question!

Its a very close one, the sound on megadrive was always better IMO. But the graphics was better on SNES. Also the variety of games was slighty better for SNES

Close one -

SNES - Steet fighter 2 Turbo, FZero, Mario, Mario Kart, Donkey Kong, Killer instinct
Megadrive - Street of rage, Golden Axe, Altered beast

I'm going to say SNES, purely because I loved Mario Kart and even bought a snes a few years ago when at uni. We had a big Mario Kart tournament

Mario Kart on all other consoles is still not as good as the original
 
This is so difficult.

I owned the Megadrive in it's day. I always wished I owned the SNES but mostly for playing SFII on a decent controller.

Both had some cracking games.

Streets of Rage 1-3 were amazing.

I voted Megadrive. :p

Megadrive always had good arcade ports but that was probably due to Sega being a top arcade company at the time. So they could easily port between their own hardware, same with the Naomi acarde system and Dreamcast.
 
Bought an imported Japanese Megadrive in 1989/90 (with the splash of red on the console, not white as UK version). First thing got me excited then was the conversion of Ghouls & Ghosts then a little later, Golden Axe. I also bought Strider, all Jap versions, and the artwork on the boxes was vastly superior to US/UK.
Then I waited for the UK release of the SNES in April 1992 - after being impressed by Final Fight conversion. Zelda, Mario Kart and Mario World were brilliant.

But it was Streetfighter 2- Jap version, that stole the show - loved playing it in the arcades and the SNES version played identical at home and looked nearly perfect too! It cost me over a hundred pounds for the imported copy of SF2.

I would say the SNES, because of SF2, Zelda and Mario Kart!
 
I think it depends on how old you were at the time. The Snes seemed for younger kids to me at the time and the games never had the same appeal to me as someone who could spend days in the arcade.

Most of the games used to revolve around some cute kiddies character, it didn't draw me in tbh. Neither did sonic I might add :)

It was Virtua racing, road rash, desert strike and strider for me over a plumber and fox and all the cutsie characters ;)
 
I was 22 when I bought my snes. Bought it purely for SF2! Then Starwing came out - cutsie fox or not - the game was just mind-blowing at the time!
 
I voted Megadrive.

I'm 28 now and back in the day with the SNES/Megadrive no one (Any one at my school anyway) had both consoles. Your console choice was based on three things...

1 - What your mates had (Round after school before dinner to play :D)
2 - What you pleaded for your parents to buy...
3 - ...what your parents bought you.

Most of my mates had Megadrives. Sonic, at the time appeared to be "Cool" and did a lot to move the console. Great times :)
 
I'm going to vote for the Mega Drive. Sonic was always my fav. The Mega drive was the first console as such holds a lot more memories for me.

That said Mario Kart was freaking insanely good (still is for that matter). As was DK.

But if I had to choose one of the consoles I would deffo pick the Mega drive.
