Snow White 2024

Here was his direct quote, just for clarity -

I guess he wanted "better" roles in films for dwarf actors than this, and felt that this film would be a step backwards, almost like taking them back to the "point and laugh" era rather than where we are now, where we see them as the serious actors they are. It still doesn't come across "well" from Dinklage, even if he meant it to come across differently though. I also think he's probably not seen the original or may be mis-remembering it, as the dwarves are very much a hard working collective who work "in a cave" but live in a house they built and are independent of having to rely on "tall people" for anything, which is a better story than his "living in a cave" makes out.
Thing is, they are fantasy dwarves, a totally different entity, not humans with dwarfism. Dinklage doesn't even know what he's talking about.

He's basically just crying that he isn't given the roles people like Tom Cruise, Ryan Reynolds and Brad Pitt are given, that's how far his entitlement and narcisscism have taken him away from reality and common sense.

There is some needless procrastination in this remake going by the latest posts on here. The film makers' job is to make a fantasy family film, an escape from reality, but instead they're mud slinging over the Israel-Gaza war and over the dwarves' appearances.

I'm disappointed because Disney have had a few poor years, then Inside Out 2 came along and did them a huge favour. Moana II and Lilo & Stitch are just around the corner, but if Disney uses Snow White as a vehicle to let politics creep back in, they're in danger of throwing it all away again.

Wonka, although wasn't a huge box office success, a slow burner, Warner Bros still got it right with the Ooompa Loompas and it was just a fun family film.

Disney hasn't let politcs creep back in, it's mandated by them from top to bottom of their organisation. Hollywood is the same, to qualify for film industry tax breaks (State of Cal) your film has to adhere to DEI qoutas, both in front and behind the camera, and all the support staff.

Total surrender/takeover to/by DEI.

Snow White was filmed in Pinewood, the tax break comes from the UK government.

Is "DEI" the same as EDI?

Hollywood or not, I keep seeing DEI on these threads and I had to look it up. DEI is US-English and the E stands for equity. I know it better as EDI as that's what my workplaces have used. In EDI, the E stands for equality which means giving everyone a chance.

I didn't have high hopes for this due to the politics around this but that trailer looks pretty faithful to the original. Much of the politics around this was about the dwarves' appearance being offensive and they got removed, so I'm glad they got put back into the movie.

This will be twice now that I'll need one of my threads renaming. The Gladiators 2023 thread got renamed to 2024, and now Snow White 2024 will need to be renamed to 2025!

Cant believe they cast this wrong yet again, the 2012 film (snow white and the huntsman) was bad enough, Kristen Stewart looking like a bag lady as snow white, then you have Charlize Theron as the wicked witch. There was that bit where she says to the mirror "whos the fairest of them all" or whatever and the mirror says "snow white" Just for a second I thought Charlize was going to turn round and shout "the mirrors broken again, can someone get me a new mirror!"

I'm not going to go into it too deeply because it's a political mindfield and i have opinions, but objectively it means Diversity, Equity and Inclusion. In terms of Diversity and inclusion i actually have no real objection and as someone who ascribes to the idea of meritocracy, we should be looking for the best person for the job while indeed being reflective of the world around us. With that said, it's not unfair to say that Disney has displayed a sharp downturn in quality since it started adopting a policy of DEI which has been largely because of the changes they've made in terms of hiring practices behind the scenes.

In terms of animation they've ejected industry legends and replaced them with people that are relatively inexperienced, for example.

The problem Disney has is that their liquidity and ability to fund projects in both parks and entertainment is dependent upon their ESG score, so it's not like they can walk back such policies aggressively without some real short term problems. Someone else might have another take on here, but....That's pretty much mine.

As for Snow White, I think there was a sound rationale behind telling the story, and this is one of those cases where I think they could never have re-made it as an animation; they'd have been crucified for it and be accused of burying the film that build the magic kingdom; the problem they have with live action is that Zegler is as opinionated as she is stupid and no one's managed to get a publicist on her case that can handle her, and Gal Gadot can't act. I'm sorry. We're talking about a woman that has the emotional range of a brick and gained notoriety because she sang imagine through covid and pulled a billion dollars out of the theatre thanks to a magnificent arse. ENTIRELY miscast. Personally I think they should have called up Natalie Portman or Anne Hathaway and asked what either were doing for the next six months.
