So, anyone got an iRobot Roomba or other robot vacuum cleaner?

It was the sideboard according to my daughter who checked when she got home from school. Guess I just need to stick a phone book under each leg of the sideboard  ;)
You can get adhesive rubber stoppers from Amazon or Ebay that will lift it up a couple of CM without looking weird. :)

Hmmm... So it's literally at the perfect height to confuse the unit. ie: It think it can get under, but it can't and so gets wegded?

Maybe cut a length of carboard (eg: 3ft by 2-3inches) and stick it hanging down under the sideboard (towards the front) so it's out of sight to humans, but the laser of little robot cleaners can see it, and deduce, "I can't get under there!"

What are these like on fairly thick carpet? Only asking as I moved into my new place at the weekend and I assumed as a new built I would have laminate flooring everywhere but thick carpet has been added, so thick that for instance my PC chair just pulling it with my hands with no weight on is a struggle for the wheels to move have to really pull at it.

If this is the case I was curious how the tracks/wheels one of these would work?

Ugh, carpet everywhere? You didn't check this at any point before you moved in?

No robots are great with thick carpet, and if I were you I would (cost permitting) get laminate or wood down ASAP.

Yeh, and wipe all your PCs and put a fresh OS on them. Also if you have any cars, get them resprayed.

pe: Yes, pointless advice like yours annoys me!

When I viewed the place it had no flooring down and as I had viewed other places in the same street which where all laminate I stupidly assumed mine would be as well Zzzz.

I don't mind the carpet but one of my next purchases was going to be a robot vacuum, maybe I will just buy one to try and then assuming I get a 14 day money back guarantee I could send it back if doesn't work.

As mentioned above lol I don't really have the money or time to go and change all the flooring just for a new vacuum haha as much as I would want to.

Was really just curious if anyone had one running on thick carpet well.

I have "regular" carpet downstairs and up, and some hard floors too. See if you can find a picture on the internet, or post one of your carpet, that gives a better impression.

I'd suggest, if it's anything basically traditional, it (a Xiaomi) should be fine. But post a picture and I'll give you a guess. I have seen some post of people complaining about the Xiaomi on deep pile carpets though!

The kind of thing that will upset it is big changes in height, or thin wires or strings (eg: tassles at ends of rugs).

Cheers for the reply :)

I will get a picture of the carpet tonight and show you just how thick it is, end of the day it may not be that bad and more the fact I have always lived in places with laminate and wood flooring so any carpet feels quite odd and thick at the moment.

Wire wise I tend to keep the place as cable free as I can so hopefully not an issue.

Awhile ago I was looking into this and heard that the app for the Xiaomi was abit hit and miss due to a lot of it not having been translated to well into English, is this still a thing or has that been corrected now?

Cheers in advance.

A fresh OS on PC's is comparable to replacing carpet with laminate? Oh Neil... at least you try and I admire that. :)

I absolutely cannot stand carpets so that is why I suggested that would replace with laminate. Carpets are an absolute nightmare to maintain and keep clean, I would even go as far as to say they are inherently unhygienic. If you don't have the cash then fair enough, I guess it can be a future project. Still, it's nuts that they put in carpet in this day and age... can you go back to the developer and ask them? It may be worth putting a bit of pressure on them and saying you expected laminate... maybe they will do you a deal or something.

Anyway back to the robot it should work as long as it's not ridiculously thick, but I imagine you will end up having to do a lot of constant maintenance on the robot due to the fibers. Try searching youtube and seeing if there are any relevant tests.

wooden floors are cold. carpets are warm.

my wooden floors look amazing but they require me to wear slippers. i don't like wearing slippers.

carpets i have no issue with. they just feel good and are warm.

It's an Ikea sideboard with those doors you push in and then they pop out. So it may have got under and then got caught on the door. I told my daughter to take it out and then open the cupboard door. It resumed cleaning okay and then finished off and went back to its dock. I'm going to try again this weekend while I can watch it and see what happens.

I've had a Roomba 770 for a few years but recently the battery seems to have stopped working properly, it will charge for a brief time but then seems to stop.

If I try to run it it goes for a few seconds then the battery icon goes red and it says I need to charge it.

I have tried directly plugging the charger cable in instead of using the dock, but seems the same. A couple of times I have been able to get it to go for longer and have it run for 10-15 minutes or more, but most of the time it just doesn't want to run anymore.

Probably time for a new battery, but before I shell out for one I would like to know if it's worth looking at a newer model or alternative as I got mine in July 2013, so it's been going for the best part of 5 years. What are the later ones like? Is Roomba still the best or should I consider a different make?

I don't use any advanced options like scheduling, I just hit the go button on mine and carry it to wherever I want to run it.

Read the thread, this question has been asked and answered numerous times. If you have the budget, get a Xiaomi.

I have had the Xiaomi for a couple of weeks, fantastic bit of kit, the Mrs who was busy eye rolling when I ordered it,now loves it and has even given it a name(Donald Trump...because it sucks)

Seems a bit of a ridiculous comment, it's a subjective thing otherwise there wouldn't be any carpet shops left. I think some rooms suit carpet and some rooms suit solid/laminate floors better (kitchen, bathrooms obviously). I personally prefer the 'warmth' of a carpet in the front room and bedrooms, we had good quality laminate installed in our old house but went for carpet in our new house now that our kids are a bit older. All personal preference though. If I had a dog or babies/toddlers I would definitely not have carpets!

I've decided to get a £20 battery from Amazon for my 770, it still worked OK before the battery died, so if it continues for a while longer than would be grand.

It's not 'ridiculous' in the slightest (do you seriously think carpets are hygenic? They really aren't), but it is of course subjective and as you say a matter of preference as to whether you want to have them or not.

The 'hygienic' bit was only one part of your post - of course people don't buy carpets for hygiene reasons. But to your other points, I've got two kids, two cats and a light coloured carpet downstairs and I have no problem maintaining it and keeping it clean. I have a pet vacuum cleaner and also a Vax carpet washer which I've used if the kids have dropped paint or anything in their playroom or walked mud in accidentally. I don't have a strong preference either way, I can (and indeed did) see the benefits of laminate, but for a home I personally prefer carpets in some rooms.

Try my suggestion then of a strip of carboard hanging down 1-2 inches from the underside of the sideboard a few inches in, just out of site to people. The cleaner's laser will see it and hopefully not go there.

Alternative put some rubber pads/cups in the sidboards feet to raise it up 1/2cm...
