So how good is Messi?

what makes you think that?

Similar comments from 5live lastnight really made my blood boil.
They kept saying 'Messi has a poor scoring record vs EPL teams in the CL even if you consider his 4 tonight, proof he simply cannot cut it in the PL'

Yet they failed to mention that C.Ron at united failed to score vs spanish opp in the CL in 11 meetings, likewise with Rooney.
And last i checked Ronaldo's doing okay for himself in La Liga, but following 5live's logic he shouldnt be able to cut it out there.

messi probably is the best in the world right now, just. what rooney has done for man utd this season how can you seperate them by much? people are saying messi is along way ahead, how can you say what rooney has done for man utd is any different to what messi is doing for barce at this moment in time, and lets not forget ronaldo hasnt exactly been poor for r.madrid has he? if they didnt get knocked out of the cl he wouldnt be getting ignored as much right now.

I think people are getting too far ahead of themselves with messi at the moment and as for people who are saying hes as good as the greats who proved them selves over a CAREER well just :D

Ronaldo was better a couple of seasons ago....

Rooney and Messi are having a top season so far.

No doubt Messi is the best player in the world right now, but like most things, next season someone else might be unstoppable.

Messi looks like he can go on and do this for years though I hope he does. As if he is 22 as well... imagine 8 or so more seasons on this form?

He already has like 200 apps for Barcelona and how many goals? 100? ish...crazy

But I think seasons like this are a bonus for a player, like Ronaldo getting 40+ goals in that season, puts a lot of pressure on yourself the season after I mean you can't always beat yourself

Messi will get an injury soon (with the number of people kicking him it's inevitable) and struggle to recover, letting the money and fame get to his head. I predict that in four years he'll be another drug-addled cabron with an enormous beer belly.

It's the South American way.

However at the moment, he's clearly the best.

42 goals out off 43 games. If thats not the best what is?

Should check out Eto'o's scoring record at Barca(and before) he put in several seasons with a very similar goals to games ratio, infact Eto'o has pretty much had what, 8 years with either the best, or equalling the best goals to game ratio of anyone in the world.

If goal scoring is the yardstick, Eto'o beats EVERYONE hands down as he did it year in year out. Only injuries and extreme hatred with Ronaldinho really kept his games per season to a lower level than would be required to boast about 50goals a season. Phenomenal player whose done it for years on end though and Messi's got some way to go. THe problem is when a team is built around a single player for so long, and that team is the best in the world, their stats aren't that comparable.

Stick any player, good or bad, in the best team in the world and their form will increase and they'll get more goals and have better performances. Would Messi have scored 42, at Bolton in 43 performances? Would he at Liverpool even, would he in any league that wasn't as open as La Liga, unlikely.

Even though he trashed us, and scored 4, it was a good performance but we didn't make it hard, he was up against Sagna and Silvestre who were pretty useless, Vermaelen who was isolated with poop around him and CLichy who was the only one who actually looked like he wanted to win so was pressuring all over the pitch. When Clichy ran out of defence and won the ball in Theo's area of the pitch I was cracking up. The chip was one on one with the keeper, Vela's done that before, he could have gone around him or done anything, easy, the badly cleared cross that dropped for him, easy, the SIlvestre assist, not easy but rather fell for him. The last one was poor defending but a nice run and stuck with it after the ball bounced around.

It wasn't the 4 best goals ever.

I was honestly thinking the other day, that his growth therapy treatments border on the, well, dodgey. Would it have been acceptable if JT decided he would be better as a 6'8 defender, so took growth hormone all through his teens, no he'd be widely blasted. But its a hard call because no one wants a kid to be a midget and unhappy. THing is he's massively built, huge neck, insane strength for a little guy and a lot of that has to be down to basically doping in his growing years.

Would he be anywhere near as good without the growth hormone, as strong, as fast, as agile?

In my lifetime Zidane has been the best player.

Henry deserves a mention, Shearer would have been up there had he signed for Man Utd after he left Blackburn I feel.

Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo need to continue this form over the next decade, there both very early 20's after all.

Just look at the promise Ronaldo showed in France 1998 and Ronaldhinio in 2002. Now there fat wasters.

Kaka is another one, seems to have took a dive in form... 2 years ago he was the best ever lol

@ DrunkenMaster - how do you explain henry's form at Barca, the best team in the world.

I don't think it's dodgy but that's an interesting point nonetheless.

Different leagues and team playing styles suit different players. I'm far from convinced that Messi or Cristiano Ronaldo could do in Italy what Kaka did. I'm not underestimating their talent but they're both used to whole different defensive game. The same goes for Fernando Torres. Eto'o is discovering that this season as he's generally not looking a threat.

In the same way, the likes of Veron were better in Italy than England because they'd get more time on the ball to pick a pass if they wanted to use it.

That explains Kaka (preferred Milan's game which centered on him and fell apart without him), Henry (so useful for Arsenal but never settled at Barcelona) and many others. Of course there are some exceptions such as Ronaldo (the real one) and a current example, Inter's Diego Milito who looks like he could score consistently in any league.

Kaka was good at Milan 'cos the team was built around him, Messi is good 'cos the team is built around him, Fabregas is good 'cos the team is built around him, not the case at Real though

its a point i made on page 1 and it got laughed at, and then ignored.

of course its dodgey.

hes like a little tree stump. low centre of mavity and high muscle mass. all through artificial means. but yea, he is a great player no doubt.

edit: what did wenger say?!

"“Messi's like a PlayStation."

thats right, he's not real. he is AI. he was constructed. normal rules of phyisics dont apply to him.

Messi is becoming very overrated and people seem to forget who Fat Ronaldo was.

LOL i dont think anyone has forgotten who Ronaldo was...its his fault that he turned into a right fat tub of lard....as long as Messi plays the way he does and doesnt let the fame and fortune hes got go to his head then he will be ok unlike a few past great players;).

In fact a few pages back it was reported that Messi is on £500k a week...and yet i dont see him going off the rails anytime soon...he comes across as a thoroughly nice lad and seems to have his head on his shoulders properly....long may it continue because he is simply out of this world unless you can come up with someone whos equally as good or better than him right now.

Even the mighty Baggio (ah memories!) said that Messi seems to be keeping his head having spoken to him which is precisely what he needs to do.

I'm off to watch some Baggio videos. Everyone should do that for 10 minutes each day.

Messi is the best player in the world at the moment.

I wouldn't say he's the best of all time or any of that, Judge him at the end of his playing life.

He has amazing talent and skill for someone who is only 22.
