So, you want to keep a pet tarantula?

Well......the BTS show is done and dusted for another year (thank Christ, couldn't take that stress and excitement every week!)

Glad to see a fantastic turnout - far far busier than last year, the sahow just seems to be going from strength to strength, as does the hobby as a whole. I tell you one thing, I was very glad to be able to enter as a trader and get in to view all the exciting stuff before the show opened to the public - all my best purchases were made before the show "opened".

Star of the show had to be the exceedingly helpful and polite Alvin Seah who was selling the bright blue Cyriopagopus species never seen before at the show. The slings were pricey but large, and I couldn't resist just one ;) Needless to say, one of the adult females he brought with him walked away with "Best In Show" at the award ceremony.

It was good to meet some new people and some familiar faces once again, including both azrael (alright la!) and hsp70 - hope you both enjoyed the show as much as I did, and didn't spend too much cash. To anyone I didn't see who was there (Stoney, didn't see you about?) sorry but I was running about like a blue arsed fly for most of the day :D

I'll get some pictures of a few of my new additions resized and put up later, after a few beers......

yup, had a great time :D will defintely be back next yr!
i was quite controlled and only bought 4 t's. That Cyriopagopus sp was amazing ! But a little too expensive for me (hopefully those people that bought them breeds them like mad and bring down the price a little :D), my most expensive T was a 40 pound Pamphobeteus vespertinus but my best bargain was probably the female columbian giant for 35.

btw. lopez is M. robusta and robustum the same name? I know the columbian giant as robustum but they were labled robusta. Glad i was able to thank you at the show for last yrs tiger rump. You weren't hard to spot though, like a kid in a toy shop :D

It was good to meet a couple of you :D Sorry I didn't hang around... was too busy trying to keep up with Leon - I gave up later on and sat on the grass talking to crazy dutch guys :)

I had a fantastic time and spent far more than I could afford, but came home with some excellent stuff. I also got tonnes of freebies, which I would have bought anyway, so I guess I really saved some money ;)

List of spiders (those I can remember) I came home with. Some were pre-ordered;

2 x Poecilotheria ornata
4 x Poecilotheria pederseni
2 x Poecilotheria striata
2 x Avicularia bicegoi
11  x Avicularia versicolor (I only bought 3 and suddenly got billions piled on me)
1 x Cyriopagopus sp. 'blue' - i.e. that awesome blue thing.
1 x Cyriopagopus shioedtei (aka thorelli)
1 x Chilobrachys fimbriatus
3 x Avicularia purpurea (not strictly from the show, but Leon gave me them there, so I'm counting them)
3 x Haplopelma lividum

No photos as yet because their either too small, or just a jar of web and mud at the moment :D

The show was fantastic!
Those who didn't make need to really get there next year.
Nice to Meet Leon and Kate and I also bumped into that guy from the Netherlands who appeared in that pic where he was feeding a P Regalis (albeit a well made up shed skin) on his hand.

I'm glad I followed your advice Lopez and bought my tanks first as they really did go fast.

I brought home 2x 1" P Regalis and a 1x 3" B Smithi.

I almost brought home a mature male P Ornata but thanks to Lopez and Ray I avoided this.

My intention was to bring home ONE spider ( A P Regalis) but I ended up with the three. It could have been a lot more if it weren't for the guys who came with me talking me out of it.

BTW Lopez, that's a poor scouse accent. :D

I've not had a chance to get a pic of my P.Regalis' yet but here is a pic of my B.Smithi...

and another...

Lopez, you were asking me about my Haplopelma sp Vietnam and about the markings on it's abdomen. Here's a couple of pics the 2nd is a good shot of the markings on it's ab.

From this pic is there anything you can tell me about this T and do you have any idea why the carapace is patchy looking?

Lastly here's a fun pic of my psycho L.Parahybana. This thing will attack just about anything and once it has it, it's tough getting it to let go as seen here....

From those shots I'd say it certainly "looks" like sp."Vietnam" but you can't be certain until it moults. When it does, try and retrieve the skin whole and I'll give you the address of someone who should be able to confirm the identity. For now I'm.....75% sure. :)

The Dutch guy is called Eddy, great bloke. The other really tall dutch guy who looks like a viking (he came over to look at your "regalis" male :p" is called Thomas, does regular trips to Africa looking for spiders and so on.

Glad you enjoyed the show

PS forgot to mention - the marks on the carapace are just where the setae (hairs) have rubbed off from digging. It happens on the patella (knees) too in asian spiders and is nothing to worry about. You want to see the state of some wild caught ones!

Check out this Haplopelma sp."longipedum" - faded and all battered looking, after a moult it should go almost black believe it or not.

As soon as it moults I'll retrieve the skin (hopefully in an alright condition).

There was somethin I wanted to ask.
The tanks I bought at the show do not have any ventilation mesh. It's just a tall tank with a glass lid. There is a very thin gab along the edge but will this be enough.

I.m keeping an H.Maculata in one and the other will house my two P.Regalis after two or three moults..

If the ventilation isn't enough I can make lids with wood and aluminium mesh but hopefully it's okay as it is.

I was really gutted I couldn't come to the show again due to uni work commitements.

I'm thinking I might go along to one of Virginia Cheeseman's open house days when I get home as I realise she lives very close to me. It would be great to see all her different Ts and pherhaps purchase some as I get to see them up close first.

Shoulda bought one with vents!
Keep an eye on moisture levels, if it constantly has water all over the glass it's too humid, make a wooden lid with mesh. Bear in mind they are prone to drying out VERY fast with a total mesh lid though :)

Hi Ston3y,

My Sp Vietnam doesn't really attack. Comes out of it's burrow of a night and bolts at any biggish disturbance. I don't get any defensive postures or anything now.

The pic further up that is viewing it from the front I was REALLY close with the camera and it didn't attack or anything. To be honest I'm a bit dissapointed but never mind, as long as it's happy.

I got the nasty one out of the bunch I think... at the show my mate almost fell over some guys table as it made him jump when it was attacking the side of the box he was holding lol

That happened to me the the time I saw a Vietnam black for the first time. I was in the pet shop and the guy picked up the tank and the thing threw itself at the side nearest me.

I moved 6 feet backwards without using a muscle. Amazing thing fear. It can help you break the law of physics.:D

I am in a state of shock.

I put a male in with my P. regalis in February, and she killed and munched him before 24 hours was up. I assumed that they hadn't mated and thought nothing more of it... until last night, when I came home from work to find a significantly slimmer P. regalis clutching an eggsac larger than a golf ball

Just a couple of months of finger crossing to go and hopefully I'll have my first batch of babies. I can't tell you how excited I am :D

Sadly no pics, you can only just see her outline through the glass and I don't want to disturb her any more than necessary.

LOL exactly :D

Managed to get a crappy pic of the sac. It's just visible as a dense white ball in all of that webbing.

Still deciding whether to leave it with the mother and let nature take its course, or remove the sac to eliminate chances of sac munching... hmmmmmmm

Congrats on the babies :) (and good luck getting the sac away from mum without ending up in casualty ;) ).

Got a new macro lens last week so here are some shots...

My vagans is camera shy atm, having just moulted last week but from what I can tell it's been another huge size increase by the eating machine.
