So, you want to keep a pet tarantula?

That’s colossal compared to the Lasiodora Cristatus I have :P

No really it is :( I can’t find it sometimes and it’s only in a 50ml pot with some peat..

It's an Aphonopelma sp. "Guatemalan Blue" bred by Guy Tansley ([email protected])
I got one for me and one for Kate.
These are a steel blue variant of Aphonopelma seemanni - Guy is not calling them seemanni so the blood lines do not get mixed :)

Zoltan, yep - Micro crickets or very small (week old) crickets will be fine for food. :)

what are you keeping yours in?
i'm keeping mine in the film roll still at the moment, i don't really have anything smaller or the same size that is practical. But i wonder if they might need a bit of sunlight.

This pet shop near me is selling a Mexican Flame Leg in the smallest of containers. Its like a tiny pill thing, its so ickle. I dont know how you would care for it.

Mine is in the film pot still. My spiders get very little sunlight at all - remember they spend the vast majority of time underground in the wild. :)
At least they are eating - small crickets the size of their own bodies!

Blue fang from Brums tarantulas arrived yesterday :D

Yes, I know I overpaid but I'd already got the postal orders before I found out.. doh

And my P.Ornata has moulted too. For some reasons it seems to have dismembered it's old skin and spread bits of it's old self all around the tub

My P ornata from Vinmann moulted just this minute. She looks stunning now, still very small though.

Today, my Haplopelma schmidti arrived all the way from Hong Kong. Accompanying her was another Haplopelma schmidti "Dark Form" (formerly Selenocosmia huwena) that I ordered for a friend.

Both spiders were very sluggish and lethargic after their flight, so I left them in their travel tanks right next to the heat mat and went to work. When I came home at lunchtime, the transformation was amazing.

The gold H. schmidti instantly reared up as I opened it's tank, stridulating loudly and striking out in every direction. Quite how I missed receiving my first bite I will never know.

With her safely in the tank, I soon saw that this was not the small sub-adult I had been expecting - this beast had legs the thickness of biros and measures around 7" with more to come!

The dark spider is far more nervous, and runs extremely fast - whereas the gold one will stand and fight. She isn't much smaller in legspan, but the carapace and legs are significantly less stocky.

Anyway, here are the pics for now, enjoy!

They both look very nice :D

I can't decide which one I like the look of the most, no wonder you got both.

One thing.. in the last photo the T looks like it has water dropplets on it's legs - I thought you weren't supposed to spray T's directly?

Unfortunately I have to send the dark one away, she isn't mine :(
Might get myself one from HK in a couple of months though, assuming my supplier still has them!

Yeah, they are water droplets on the legs. T's don't like beingsprayed, but it's a bloody good way of controlling a feisty adult T that doesn't want to go where you want it to ;)

Yes :D I have had to use this a few times. However, when changing some stuff around in my A.Seemanis tank she decided that a bid for freedom was more important than the water spray and the pastic spoon I was using to try and keep her in the tank with. I recaptured her using a tupperware tub after she had made it as far as the clean pots on the washing board :)

One freshly moulted Poecilotheria ornata:

And here's my Chilobrachys sp. "burmensis" that came in the same order from Thomas Vinmann:

I can't get a decent shot of the regalis yet, it won't stop running about! I'll just wait until she moults, that might tire her out enough to sit still for the camera!

Oops.. looks like I haven't updated for a bit, and quite a lot's been happening, so I'd better post some pics

First off, I received 3 P. ornata, 3 P. regalis and a Tapinauchenius purpureus a week last Saturday. Unfortunately, the only pics I have are blurred and really not worth posting. All spiderlings are pretty small, with one of the ornata's being biggest at 1.5". A P. regalis and P. ornata have now gone to Leon and I am thinking of keeping my remaining P. regalis' communally because they will apparently cohabit quite happily. I will try and get some photos at some point, but all of the slings move like lightening, despite their size. The T. purpureus also shot up my arm and up my top whilst I was trying to re-home him. I took my top off and felt him scamper all the way down my back and run across my arse. Thankfully I managed to catch him before he got to the floor.

Secondly, I have some moults;

Tamil carried on her trend of amazingly quick growth and moulted just under two months after her previous moult. This is amazing for a 5.5" T. She's now slightly more than 6" and looking gorgeous! She's also definitely a female, which is great because I'll be breeding her as soon as I can.

And her skin;

My A. versicolor, Louis also finally moulted. Out of all of my T's, he's the one who's moulted most frequently. I've had 6 moults out of this little fella now and he's certainly getting his adult colours at last. Check out that gorgeous deep red abdomen. He's so metallic he almost shines in natural light.

The C. cyanopubescens, Tachira moulted over the weekend whilst I was away. He's a stunner. These are his adult colours now, and I can't begin to describe how vivid they are irl. His deep blue legs are covered with gold hairs, which looks wicked.

And finally, I bought a nice big piece of cork bark for Tamil, and decided to give Zuila (adult male P. irminia) a couple of nice photos on it before I send him away to woo some hot sexy P. irminia females. I'll be sad to see him go, but it's his duty in life. Apparently P. irminia females are a bit... erm... rough, so I probably won't see him again. Poor little guy

(his tank is rather hard to spray without actually spraying him, hence the water droplets).

Getting a littel concerned about my three yet again!! I've got a feeling they're either too humid, to wet or just too hot. All three have started climbing the walls the past two days or so, it doesn't matter if they're away from the heat or not either. The strange thing i was letting them dry for a while as i sprayed a little too much last time.
