Solar panels and battery - any real world reccomendations?

@Kot You can't use the Multiplus II 10000 grid tied yet - rather ennoyinly its not yet been G99 certified, would need to be the Quattro 48/10000. Victron will get it tested along with the Quattro II, but no time scale when I asked recently.

They said they were in the queue when I asked, with a view to having them certified by 2Q '23. To long to wait, but given battery lead times, not that big of a deal given you'll only be missing the rubbish winter generation.

Interesting, what's the benefits of the Multiplus II and Quattro II over the Quattro?

Well they are a newer design, more compact, and the GX version have the controller built in. The main reason though was to allow more grid tied setups in the EU due to various regulations for ESS setups.

If love to get the Quattro II 8000, but not sure if I can wait long enough for the ENA approval. :(

Thanks both for your valuable feedback, but its ip21 and Blue lol I was wanting it all outside, so Victron is a non starter for me.

Not sure I can wait that long either, and like most things it will likely be delayed well into summer months - 2Q being April to June. There may not be much solar in the winter but there's still savings to be had by charging off peak.

What's wrong with blue, it will still work just fine? Mines going in a detached garage, so IP rating is not an issue for me.

Hmmm, Octopus thrown up a real conundrum now for the winter. Got our new Economy 7 unit prices through. Daytime price is going up from 30 to 40p. Night time price going DOWN from 21p to 16p - which I really wasn't expecting.

So now, over winter I'm thinking it'll likely be cheaper to charge the car entirely overnight, and then use the solar to cover the majority of our daytime use. Even if I'm exporting a fair percentage of the generated power to the grid.

Compared to, on a cloudy day, generating around 500w and pulling the rest of the 2kw from the grid at 40p a unit.

Not sure. Having 16p for 8 hours, instead of 7.5p for 4 hours might be better.

I can only charge at 3pin socket rate. So if I've run it low it will take more than 4 hours (charges at about 10% an hour).

Hmm Octopus SEG payments are now 15ppkWh from 20th September. :)

So now I can export it all, and buy back at 21:30 to 02:30 and make profit!

Hacks!

(I still need MCS paperwork).

What is the wear on the battery I wonder? it seems a little silly that you can export at 15p/kwh and then re-import at 7.5p/kwh

Makes it more difficult to decide on the standard 15p a unit, or the agile version of the outgoing tariff now!

But then again, it's 58p for 17:30-18:00 time period! Can't wait to get my MCS certificate and figure out how to dump my battery into the grid at the ideal time!

Not sure if I'm getting confused here, but it seems that you can't get on Octopus Outgoing whilst also being on Go still, this includes the fixed Outgoing and the Agile Outgoing.

Instead you can go onto a less well paying SEG tariff, so possibly not one we can get onto for 15p/kwh export whilst staying on Go then.

Edit - Calling it, we can't get onto this 15p/kwh tariff with Go for import: https://octopus.energy/blog/outgoing/

The only export one we can use is the SEG one. I hope the SEG one goes up a bit more though. 4.1p/kwh is daylight robbery.

Do I need to be on a special tariff for my energy consumption?

No, Outgoing Octopus is independent of your regular consumption tariff.

Currently, you can't be on both Outgoing Octopus AND Octopus Go, our electricity consumption tariff designed for electric vehicle drivers. We've made this decision because both are such incredibly good value tariffs that it would be unsustainable for us as a business – the equivalent of letting people buying goods in a shop using a "3 for 2" offer and then bringing them back for a full price refund! The combination of Outgoing and Agile works really well and offers potential for great savings. You can choose to be on Octopus Go and join our new SEG tariff for Outgoing, offering 4.1p / kWh for your export – just get in touch with our team to take this option.

This is curious, maybe instead of GO and SEG at 4.1p I will be better off on their E7 tariff and Octopus Outgoing. New numbers need crunched!

do you know if an old android phone would work???
Basically if it'll load webpages fine, then that's all home assistant needs - you have a pc, nas or most commonly a raspberry pi running it all and the tablet just loads the web page. PM me if you need further details/photos etc!

I spoke with Octopus SEG today, after lots of tooing and froing, and they said they don't know if they are going to offer a better rate to Go customers, if they do maybe capped at the rate they pay inbound off-peak. So 5p/7.5p/8.25p etc. depending what you are on with them for your incoming power. So all is not lost yet, and I have a feeling that there will be pressure on the other SEG licencees to offer better rate via the government/Ofgem in the next 6-9 months, even if that is only 10-12p it's a goo help.

I’ve just been on the phone to Octopus and SEG is 4.1pence. I assume you’ve been selling for years and this is an historic thing?

Edit: I should have read a page or so more before commenting :D

Bang bang crash bang smash… powers out, powers on, powers out, powers on…

The install is happening as we speak, it’s taking its time, the weather is holding up (touch wood) and I’ll be good to go in no time hopefully!

Interesting to know - also I thought there was some government/energy firm thing in the works to pay you to not use energy at peak times (ie 6pm-10pm), so wonder how this will play out. Might be something in mini-budget on Friday or in coming weeks.
