Some quick piccys of the XR2

Bog Standard.

if you want to go quickly buy something else.
bring it back to the way it left the line.

Nah.

Was it Cryfreeman(?) who has kept posting his mates' giantkiller XR2?

They're criminally underrated cars.

150bhp, no interior, polybushes and secondhand shocks will give you one hell of a track/fast road car.

i've seen Lada's that are good track cars...if you strip them and make them hardcore.
the fact is few people can/are prepared to put up with no interior on a road car.
MOST people just increase the power and mildly uprate the suspension and if you apply this to the XR2 then there are simply better cars to choose from.
the OP has a really nice example that IMHO should be kept standard.

sometimes to be alternative, you have to go with what used to pass for conventionality.

Nice XR2, I'm more of a fan of the Mk1 in all honesty, first time I ever felt hugely exhilarated as a passenger was in a tuned Supersport.

no, this is. wanted one of these when they came out, and i'd still have one if i came across a tidy example.

And the ops looks considerably better than that.

My friends track car we use has full interior bar a back seat.

parts inc:

Roll cage
Battery in boot
Spax shox
Rs Turbo engine / midly tuned to around 170bhp
R888's

Thats pretty much it.

Havnt taken her to a track with long straights yet but @ tight and twisty haynes when we go with soutwest scoobies the car is always fighting for fastest car.

Also attended a MLR meet there recently and think I had 3rd fastest tuned car on the day.

I posted a 75 sec flat lap with a 0-64ft time half a second slower than the Evo's on the day. A pro driver in a new 9GT on the day posted a high 73.

heres the MLR leader board @ haynes

http://www.lancerregister.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=68023&highlight=haynes

most evo's on there are posting 1.7 to 2.0 0-64ft. fiesta was 2.5 :o which brings the actualy gap even closer.

pretty confident I can get another second out of the fiesta to. :)

They're identical other than the rear hatch, front slam panel, lights and valence. :/

Exactly, all the angular bits that got softened off on the Mk2.....

I'm with Lopez. Subtle though the differences are, I'd love another Mk1. Wouldn't even look twice at a Mk2.

edit - though the OP has a v nice example. My Mk1 used to have a bulb on the floor next to the clutch that you stepped on to work the washers. Nobody believes me when I tell them.

Nice example. Had a soft spot for the XR2 after my mate nearly killed us in his racing a 309GTI about, erm, 11 years ago.

Cheers for comments guys. As for the guy asking is it as clean as it looks. Yup. Ill grab some inner bay shots etc. I was thinking Zetec route, but at the moment i can lay my hands on pretty much everything i want for cheap. Until i bloe the bottom end up (which wont be long :p) Ill change to either zetec or rs turbo lump. :)

Hahaha, I remember coming out of a club (I was des.) at 3am in the middle of December and it was so cold I could barely feel my feet. Got in the car, fired it up and just could NOT get it into reverse....... crunch crunch crunch.

After a few seconds I realised I had my foot on the washer bulb thing instead of the clutch :p They deleted it on the later models :(

That is in amazing condition for its age  Very nice indeed :) I like the 'fast' Fords (and other makes) from the 80s, I think they had more character and charm than cars do nowadays.

/remembers my Sierra 2.0iS fondly :)

Nice car, I know which I'd chose for a blast around some country lanes if it were the XR2 or say a 51 reg e39! - No! it would'nt be the e39! ;)

Don't know how my car ends up in every thread even when I don't mention it but never mind. Took mine up on the winding North Yorkshire moorland roads yesterday. It was absolutely awesome and never once did I wish I was in an old Fiesta. Cornered amazingly well and then shifted on on the straights and had the power to overtake whenever there was a suitable straight ;)

Although like I said, what is my car doing in this thread anyway

Why not just go for a zetec instead of wasting time on the old 8v engine?

what i was gonna say.... 2 litre zetec bottom end, 8 valve turbo top end and t3 turbo. off you go...

quite easy to do as theres a DIY guide on the net and all you need to do is blank off a few bits and adjust a few pulleys and job done. mate of mine stuck a 1.8 zetec on the bottom of his XR3i. :)

to OP, thats a very clean XR2. i was looking for another XR2 to turbo but i can never find a clean one. the only ones worth looking at go for silly money - £2k+
