Spanish Grand Prix 2012, Catalunya - Race 5/20

So what stopped the engineer from quickly telling people what happened and fixing it? Would have taken seconds.

Although with McLaren it would have probably had to be phoned back to the facgtory, gone through simulations, testing, confirmation from the committee before being passed back to the team to implement the fix...

Didn't have time he only passed the finish line with seconds left.
All the way to the back is very harsh. Why not just disqualify that time and use his banker.

This is seriously a joke. He should have just had that laptime removed, or at the abosulte most, removed him from Q3 completely. Making him start from the back? Pathetic.

Dear oh dear oh dear oh dear...Hamilton now starting at the back of the grid, thats his race done.

What an utter bunch of clueless ****ing muppets McLaren are, seems like one of the crew members made a mistake :/...unbelievable and the guy who made the mistake surely should be sacked.

Swear since Whitmarsh has taken over from Dennis, McLaren and Hamilton especially have been going backwards.

Cant really see Hamilton doing anything of note this season, McLaren have let him down badly this season :/

Harsh that he has to start at the back of the grid, these stewards really are a rough bunch.

I do agree starting from the back is harsh. Remove his Q3 times and make him start 10th as an absolute max. Nothing that they did in Q3 affecting the fact that they got there in the first place.

If McLaren underfueled him and told him to stop on track because of it then they broke the rules and should be penalised. I'm not disputing that.

What? Penalised during a race for a rule that only applies to Qualifying? How would that work?

There is a rule that cars at the end of the race have to have enough fuel to be tested when they arrive into Parc Ferme.

Vettel stopped his car at the exit to the pit lane as he had run out of fuel at the last race.

I personally don't see any difference.

Steady on, he's 2nd in the WDC by 4 pts isn't he?

That was his 3rd pole of the season and by nearly 6 tenths too at what is recognised as the first real benchmark circuit.

Hamilton may as well pack up and go home. With less fresh tyres and dumped to the arse end of the grid... He's been in a great mood all weekend, this may ruin it.

Not entirely surprised as it's Spain though.

At least this sets a precedence and we can judge how fair the stewards/FIA are next time this happens (to any driver).

I bet if it hadn't be Hamilton the punishment would have been less severe.

I knew as soon as he stopped on track that he'd lose PP, so did the Spanish fans - the fuel rule came about because Lewis pulled that trick at another race, his card is marked. McLaren are making too many mistakes this season.

Yeah, the car is great. But the team behind him have made a lot of mistakes this year, which have cost him a lot of points!

The difference is the bit about needing to return to the pits under your own power. In qualifying you do, in the race you don't. Hamilton failed to and the reason for not making it back was not sufficient.

The reason this rule exists is because of Lewis in Canada in 2010 (I think).

He has been stung by his own rule.
